UNAIR NEWS – In 2019, Universitas Airlangga is targeted to reach Top 500 World Universities by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti). To become the world class university, UNAIR keeps making effort to achieve the target such as by targeting increased number of journal indexed by Scopus in 2017.
It is stated by Vice Rector III Faculty of Medicine UNAIR Prof. Dr. Ni Made, dr., MS, Sp.MK ., during a workshop of International Journal Publication Assistance in GRAMIK FK UNAIR, (28/2). This workshop was held to inform the mechanism to publish research in international journals indexed by Scopus.
Prof. Made believes that one way to be a WCU (World Class University) is through research publication in international journal indexed by Scopus. It is pursuant to the regulation of Kemenristekdikti in 2017 which obliges the lecturers to publish scientific works in national or international journals.
“Last year, the publications in international journals indexed Scopus were only 64 publications. And this year we target 162 international publications Scopus indexed,” she said.
In the same occasion, the Head of Scientific Publication and Journal Development Center (PPJPI) Dr. drg. Prihartini Widiyanti, M.Kes., said that the publications in International journals are important parameter, therefore there are a few things we need to prepare such as scientific works, cover letter, the option of scientific journals and strong motivation.
“In determining the publication target, one of the steps is choosing the right journal,” she said.
Yanti also explained the right mechanism of paper submission and how to avoid predatory publisher which will only incur a loss to the authors.
“PPJPI also provides assistance for translation and guidance for lecturers who have problems in submitting papers in international journals,” she said.
Beside lecturers, the students can also publish their thesis through reworking process or recycling it into a scientific paper as stated by the Deputy of PPJPI Dr. drg. Hendrik Setia Budi, M.Kes.
Reworking can be done by the supervising lecturers with the students’ knowledge. Some steps in reworking are checking the work’s feasibility and online data. The online data checking (repository and journal) is done to prevent plagiarism by using an application which checks the extend of the plagiarism.
“What we need to keep in mind when we publish in international journal is the procedure of the composition in order to be acceptable by the editor so it would get reviews,” he said.
Meanwhile, dr. Lukman Hakim, M.Kes., Sp.U., Ph.D., explained that the abstract is the most important in the paper as it is the first part which is reviewed.
“Make an eye-catching title and abstract as detailed as possible with clarity,” he said.
As an expert and editor of international journal, dr. Lukman emphasized that the author should avoid a dispute between reviewers. “Reply and comply with any comments from the viewers and revise your works as best as you can. And most importantly, avoid plagiarisms or any other things which can cause a retraction,” he said.
The workshop did not only discuss about the tips to international publications, Prof. Myrtati Dyah Artaria, M.A., Ph.D., as Vice Dean III FISIP Universitas Airlangga also shared her experience on how to get her manuscripts accepted.
In her opinion, there are some points to make the scripts accepted, such as adding new and relevant references before finalization, choosing a trending topic or something special and unique to Indonesia, writing complete and detailed abstract, using up-to-date method and correct English, choosing the right journal and learning the style of writing.
“What we need to provide is the time to write,” she said.
The grammar used in the journal is important and it should be given more attention. There were also tips for the translator and proofreader presented by Folia Medica Indonesiana FK UNAIR journal management, Moch. Zuhdy, S.Sos.
Zuhdy explained some tips and procedures of the grammar used in international journals. “A good composition is easy to understand and well-structured, especially for international journals. The use of tenses, syntax, active or passive, transitive or intransitive should be given more attention,” he said.
