Launch and Review Book, Literature and Culture Study Potential Choice of Program

UNAIR NEWS – Comparative literature is a course of study offered in Master program of Literature and Culture, Faculty of Humanities (FIB), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). Great literary works adapted to other form of literature, from novels to films, poems to novels are examples of what studies in this course.

One of the outputs of comparative literature is a book publishing. As the book launched last week, a student of the Literature and Culture master program 2013 launched their book entitled “Dari Religiusitas Hingga Seksualitas dalam Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya (From Religiosity to Sexuality in Language, Literature and Culture)”, on Friday, April 29. The book review was held in Chairil Anwar Hall, FIB UNAIR, invited Puji Karyanto, S.S., M.Hum and Ida Nurul Chasanah, S.S M.Hum as speaker.

“From Religiosity to Sexuality is a spirit we took from a part of the book. The book talks about comparative literature. About education, gender, sexuality, plagiarism in literature. Various stuff,” said Akhmad Fatoni, S.S., M.Hum, one of the students who took the course.

Regarding the “sexy” title, Akhmad Fatoni said that even religiosity and sexuality are very far apart literally, but they are related closely.

“When we talk about sexuality we also talk about religiosity, on how people put sexuality. Different religiosity level will bring different behavior towards sexuality. Literally they are different but spiritually they affect each other,” he said.

Potential Course of Study

In the occasion, Vice Dean I FIB UNAIR said that literature and culture study master program is a potential program for literature students who want to continue study. It is accredited A and one of two master programs appointed by Kemenristekdikti for students who want to apply for Future Lecture Dikti Scholarship.

“Since its establishment, there is always a foreign student who takes this program. The applicants are always many, but overall, we just admit 30 students maximum,” Puji said.

There are foreign students who programmed this comparative literature. According to Puji, the quality of the foreign students depends on their personalities. Indonesian language acquisition is important for foreign student. There is also a new policy from UNAIR Director of Education which assist foreign students in improving quality during their study in UNAIR.

“Regarding Indonesian language Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), Prof. Nyoman obliged academic writing to deal with foreign student substantial problems,” he said. (*)
