BEM FIB UNAIR Cleans River with Osoji Club Surabaya Community

UNAIR NEWS – Students are expected to agents and leaders to solve problems in the community. At least, their role is channeled in the smallest scope, in the closest community.

As done in the environmental sector, Student Executive Board (BEM) Faculty of Humanities in collaboration with the Osoji Club Community of Surabaya held Subermen (Karang Menjangan Clean River) Activity in RT 1, RW 7, Karang Menjangan, Surabaya City, Sunday morning, August 5.

The activity was done by cleaning the river from the waste with a caruk (trident stick). Rubbish is picked up, then put into a trash bags. By local residents, the waste is processed as an effort of reuse, reduce, and recycle.

Minister of Community Service BEM FIB UNAIR Iqbal said that the entire team worked hand in hand to clean up the river with the locals. The trident sticks were provided by the committee.

“We plunged into the river with the trident sticks to get the garbage. We, from the committee itself, provided them, “he said.

“The men went into the river, while the women took and sorted the garbage,” he added.

According to Iqbal, some cleaning products are processed, for example, used bottles. The others were collected, then the Surabaya City Sanitation and Landscaping Service took them. The activity was held because the river flow was disrupted especially in rainy season. It can cause floods.

“Before the activity, the water (flow, ed) was clogged up. There were also found lots of diapers, household furniture such as used furniture, umbrellas, and plastic waste, ” he said.

Garbage socialization

After cleaning up, the committee disseminated some information on waste management at the hall.  Wiji Lestari, Head of RT 1, and Surya, representative of Osoji Club Surabaya spoke in the forum. It was themed “Education on the Dangers of Garbage in the River”. There were 26 about people attended.

“Reducing garbage is good. If there is a lot of garbage, we must be creative. We should recycle them into useful items so they do not become garbage, “said Surya in his presentation.

Related to these activities, the Osoji Club was glad to be involved in such social action.

“We’re glad to be here. Because the people’s response is also very good to manage the waste, “Surya said.

Meanwhile, Wiji stated that good waste management is needed in the community. In addition, it is necessary to recycle the waste to have economic value.

“Let’s make it, for a week organic waste from the residents can reach a truck. There must be someone who coordinates waste in each block (gang) to help me. Then we can use the money for mutual benefit, “he said in response to Asiyah’s question, one of the residents, about the management of organic waste that accumulates in the environment.

Subermen is the continuation of BEM FIB UNAIR’s work program last year. In the future there is a program to provide trash nets in the river. If the river is clean, a fish cage net will be made. (*)
