UNAIR NEWS – Surabaya municipal government is now concentrating on two sectors, namely service sector and trade sector. Witnessing role optimization in service sector and trade, Surabaya Mayor, Ir. Tri Rismaharini, M.T, accompanied by Prof. Mari Elka Pangestu as ISD Board of Advisor, with Ir. Herliza, M.Sc., as the Director of Service Trade Negotiation delivered their lecture in a Public Discussion held at the Faculty of Economy and Business Universitas Airlangga, Saturday (11/3).

The public discussion which was attended by the representative of Indonesia Services Dialogue (ISD), Surabaya municipal government, students from FEB UNAIR, and students from other State Universities and Private Universities was entitled “Regional Optimization of Service Sector Role to Support National Economy”. Prof. Mari Elka Pangestu explained that in terms of jobs, service sector went on rocketing. This is in line with economy structural change of a developing country which moved towards more advanced country.

“Indeed, a country’s future can be seen from its service sectors”, explained Prof Mari.

The director of Service Trade Negotiation Ir. Herliza, M.Sc., added that Indonesia aimed at two targets in the International Trade Negotiation. Internally, to push service sector development, and cooperate with foreign service product supplier to meet the demand of domestic need which still hasn’t been able to be met by domestic service supplier.

“Externally, to open market access in partner country through preferences buy like eliminating discriminative obstruction, and professionals recognition,” she explained.

In addition, during panelists forum, the public discussion went on communicative. Some discussion participants asked questions to each competent panelists.

“Once we are starting to be open in service sector, we have to also boost our human resources, one way of doing which is by giving them competitive skills. Thus, when passing a student from a university, we, apart from providing them with hard skill, also provide them with soft skill. In the world of work, especially in service sector, soft skill is more important than hard skill,” explained Rosanto Dwi Handoyo, Ph. D as Researcher and Alumni of FEB UNAIR.

At the end of the discussion, Ir. Tri Rismaharini delivered the closing lecture for the participants. “My most sophisticated economic theory is start building economic sector from the biggest scope, then the smaller scope will automatically follow,” she ended.
