UNAIR NEWS – Is it true that the “tradition” of carok in the Madurese ethnic community is now experiencing a shift in meaning? That fact was found in the research of the Student Creativity Program in Social Humanities (Soshum) by five students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).
Fadillah and his four friends Fadhli, Lidya, Wildan and Amanda, found some new data that has never been found in previous carok research.
Quoting Wikipedia, carok is a tradition of fighting that is caused for certain reasons associated with pride using weapons (usually celurit ).
But the PKMP-SH Team, which emphasizes the shift of carok meaning itself, found that the carok that once occurred only because of serious things such as  a problem for a woman, taking others’ wife, the seizure of the inherited land, etc., is now experiencing a shift because with only some mistake on speech or a trivial insult can cause carok.
PKMP-SH team who studied about this carok was one of the PKM engaged in research and managed to obtain funds from DIKTI. This PKMP-SH had a very sensitive theme, but it was also interesting on carok tradition in Madura, East Java.
M Fadhillah confirmed that carok is a tradition of pride that has become a culture inherent in Madura. If there is someone whose pride is trampled he will challenge people who insult him by using celurit.
Carok can happen because when someone’s wife was taken by someone else, then he will not reluctant to challenge the one who took his wife for a fight.
“Because in Madura region, pride is number one and highly important, but PKM-SH group here gives a new touch of carok research that has been done before,” he said.
Therefore, the PKMP-SH team wanted to give understanding that all forms of violence done by using celurit in the area of Madura is not always a tradition of carok and to show new data that does not exist in previous carok research, for example about the shifts in the tradition of carok today. (*)
