UNAIR NEWS – The annual program of Department of Community Service, UNAIR Faculty of Dental Medicine’s Student Executive Board, Elementary Dental Education (EDE), has been held again this year. This program focuses on educating the public, especially at a young age, about the importance of maintaining oral health. Organizing this year’s EDE, the Community Service Department of BEM FKG UNAIR collaborated with the Yayasan 1000 Senyum (1000 Smiles Foundation). This activity was held on Saturday, December 5, 2020 in Kampung Sulung, North Surabaya.
To explore the details of the program, the editorial team spoke with Samuel as a representative of EDE committee team. Samuel said that this year’s EDE activity also included material on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), given that the outbreak of COVID-19 had not yet subsided.
Regarding the dental health material, the committee educated the children on the importance of maintaining oral health, such as the causes of cavities, how to brush teeth correctly, and good and bad food for dental health. Samuel shared that EDE also offers fun activities for children to participate in, such as interactive games, singing songs related to how to brush teeth and wash hands properly, and the distribution of food.
“This EDE socialization is very important to provide insights on the importance of maintaining oral health and maintaining health from a young age. Many people, especially young people, do not know the importance of brushing their teeth, how to brush their teeth and wash their hands, and how to apply Hygiene and Healthy Life Habits. Of course, it is a special concern because it can cause more serious health problems, “he concluded.
