UNAIR NEWS – There are two flagship programs at the Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga. The two programs have great potential to produce graduates bring benefits to community. They are Disaster Management and Forensic Science.
Interviewed in his office on Friday, February 2, Deputy Director I Postgraduate School. Prof. Dr. Anwar Ma’ruf, drh., M. Kes. said that of the eleven programs in the postgraduate school, two of them are important according to the strategic plan of UNAIR.
“In Indonesia, disaters often happen. There is disaster everywhere, almost every day,” said Prof Ma’ruf. “Therefore, Disaster Management is needed by the community, in how to train people face this kind of situation so they do not to fear, but also not underestimate them,” he added.
The postgraduate leadership has designed the curriculum, it contains disaster awareness training that can be followed online.
In addition to Disaster Management, continued Prof Anwar, Forensic Science is gaining popularity as it is really needed. Forensics is not just about medicine and humans. Due to technological sophistication that continues to grow, new studies on digital forensics is quite popular.

At the postgraduate school, besides studying digital forensics, animal forensics and accounting forensics are also studied. In the last two years, forensic science program at UNAIR has gained enthusiasts and the demand exceeded the specified target.
Attracting students
Various efforts were made by the Postgraduate School to attract students. One of them is through implementation flexible studies. In the postgraduate school, lectures do not have to be done in the morning until the afternoon. Lectures can be done at night, even Saturday and Sunday.
Such as Police Science program, for example. “Weekend class is usually done by students of Police Science Studies. The police officers who study are the chief of police, precinct, and so forth, “said Prof Ma’ruf.
In addition, there is 10 percent of all lectures done through e-learning. From 14 times face-to-face lectures, two of them are implemented through e-learning. Thus, studies can run flexibly. This is one of the strategies to attract students in terms of curriculum.
Most recently, according to the rector’s decree, starting 2018, all postgraduate students are required to publish in reputable journals. One way to do it is by organizing an international conference held every year.
In 2017 for example. Of the 202 papers included in the seminar, 82 papers were selected. This paper was published in the ISI-Thomson indexed journal .
In 2018, precisely in July, there will be an international conference in collaboration with postgraduate schools of University of Lambung Mangkurat and University of Mataram. The outputs of this conference will be to produce papers to be published in the Scopus-indexed journals.
In cooperation with Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE) UNAIR, Postgraduate School will go to Timor Leste. In addition to attending public lectures, their arrival is to conduct feedback on the collaboration. Timor Leste will send more students to continue their studies at UNAIR.
Of course, this will increase the number of foreign students studying at UNAIR. Students from Africa through Developing Country Partnership Scholarship Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, and students from Myanmar through World Class University (WCU) scholarship from UNAIR have previously studied in UNAIR.
