UNAIR NEWS<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 <\/span>Benefita<\/span> Diva Putra Wibowo, a student from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas <\/span>Airlangga<\/span>, got the IISMA learning <\/span>experience<\/span> in one of <\/span>the <\/span>top universities in the UK, the University of York.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

To UNAIR NEWS, <\/span>Ben said that pursuing studies in the UK has been a long-held <\/span>dream<\/span> of his.<\/span> Through IISMA, he <\/span>didn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t<\/span> want to waste th<\/span>e<\/span> precious opportunity. He put in all his efforts to become one of the awardees of IISMA 2023.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cFrankly, it was a long journey. I had three months to get the documents <\/span>ready<\/span>, including the English <\/span>proficiency<\/span> test (EPT), passport, and essay. Alhamdulillah, <\/span>I <\/span>completed all the procedures and <\/span>now, <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> studying<\/span> at<\/span> York University<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> he said.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Culture shock<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

For Ben, b<\/span>eing one of the awardees is a blessing<\/span>. <\/span>It was the first time he had lived abroad on his own. While he was in the UK, <\/span>h<\/span>e experienced <\/span>a lot of <\/span>differences<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Faculty of Economics and Business students noted the difference in the cuisine. It took him a while to get used to British cuisine, which uses noticeably different food ingredients. <\/p>\n\n

\u201c<\/span>Since my first arrival in England, the difference in food was the first thing I noticed. <\/span>The majority of<\/span> food in England is less seasoned and<\/span> bland. This contrasts with the habits of Indonesian <\/span>flavory<\/span> and spice-rich<\/span> cuisines,\u201d<\/span> he added.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Ben also went through another\u202fcultur<\/span>e <\/span>shock because of the English educational system. Studying in England offers more flexibility<\/span>, especially in <\/span>terms<\/span> of <\/span>class attendance<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cIn Indonesia, attendance is an important factor. The University of York doesn\u2019t consider its attendance policy very urgent. Final essays for the semester are used for assessment,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n

The lecturers are very open to discussion. They always discuss the learning materials in class. The study time in class is not stretched for a long period. <\/p>\n\n

\u201c<\/span>I felt like in a seminar or talk show. The lecturers prefer discussion over monotonous <\/span>lectures<\/span>. <\/span>I think <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> an effective way <\/span>for students to quickly understand <\/span>the materials,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> he said.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Social <\/span>and cultural <\/span>initiatives<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

Apart from studies, the Sidoarjo-origin student also conducted social and cultural initiatives with the local students. One of them is the Batik Day celebration. <\/p>\n\n

To promote Indonesian culture, various types of batik, traditional toys, and traditional fabrics are introduced to local students. They also sold traditional clothing, batik kits, and traditional dishes. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe sold batik kits to local students and invited them to learn batik-making. Each kit contained fabric, wax, and batik-making tools. The proceeds from the sales were donated to St. Leonard\u2019s Hospice. We yielded 215 GDP from the sales,\u201d Ben said. <\/p>\n\n

Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology for the IISMA learning opportunity. \u201cIt\u2019s an unforgettable experience. After completing my studies, hopefully, I can contribute to the education in Indonesia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n
