UNAIR NEWS<\/span><\/span><\/strong> – <\/span>Data Science and Technology (<\/span>TSD<\/span>) students from the Faculty of Advanced<\/a><\/span> Technology<\/span> and Multidisciplin<\/span>e<\/span> (<\/span>FTMM<\/span>) <\/span>Universitas <\/span>Airlangga<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>UNAIR) have <\/span>made another achievement<\/span>. <\/span>Tentan<\/span> Team<\/span>, consisting of Netri Alia Rahmi, Muhammad Reza <\/span>Erfit<\/span>, and <\/span>Elzandi<\/span> Irfan Zikra,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has <\/span>secured 2nd place in the Machine Learning Competition at the <\/span>Data S<\/span>layer event held by Telkom Institute of Technology<\/span>, <\/span>Friday<\/span>, Dec 1, 2024<\/span>,<\/span> to Sunday, Jan 7, 2024.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The qualifying rounds of the competition were held from Friday<\/span>, <\/span>Dec 1<\/span>,<\/span> 2023, <\/span>to Thursday<\/span>, Dec 14, 2023.<\/span> During these 14 days, Team <\/span>Tentan<\/span> was granted access<\/span> to 78,500 data specifications of four-wheeled vehicles and their carbon emission levels. The team<\/span> was<\/span> challenged<\/span>\u00a0to create the best A<\/span>I<\/span> model <\/span>to <\/span>predict carbon emission levels with various specifications, aiming for the smallest error score<\/span> possible<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Tentan Team qualified for the semifinals, securing a final model with a Root Mean Square Error (RSME) of approximately 19.05 points. In an interview with the team leader, Netri Alia Rahmi mentioned that if a vehicle has 2,714,100 g\/km emissions, Tentan’s model predicted the vehicle’s emissions with outstanding accuracy, differing by only about 19 grams. <\/p>\n\n

Ranked 7 out of 107 <\/span>t<\/span>eams<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

On<\/span> Friday<\/span>, Dec 15, 2023,<\/span> the <\/span>Tentan<\/span> Team<\/span> explained their coding results by <\/span>submitting<\/span> a notebook in <\/span>\u2018<\/span>pkl<\/span>\u2019<\/span> format. <\/span>Tentan<\/span> Team <\/span>secured the 7th rank among 107 other teams <\/span>participating<\/span> in<\/span> the competition.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Tentan<\/span> Team <\/span>advanced to the final round on Saturday<\/span>, Dec 23, 2023.<\/span> In this stage, the team <\/span>presented their approach, explained insights gained from the data, and <\/span>provided<\/span> recommendations for the respective vehicle brands. The final evaluation was based on three criteria: model accuracy, notebook quality, and presentation skills. <\/span>Tentan<\/span> Team <\/span>achieved the 2nd place with a final score of 182.98 points, <\/span>as <\/span>announced on Sunday<\/span>, Jan 7, 2024.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Team <\/span>c<\/span>hallenges<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

Alia mentioned that during the competition journey, they <\/span>encountered<\/span> several challenges. For instance, the received data was <\/span>highly complex<\/span>,<\/span> with the presence of empty data, units in different formats, and diverse data type variations. <\/span>D<\/span>ata inconsistency and <\/span>numerous<\/span> outliers added difficulty to the processing,<\/span> requir<\/span>ing<\/span> a considerable amount of time to achieve ‘clean’ data ready for machine learning<\/span> processing.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The team’s pre<\/span>–<\/span>processing <\/span>addressed <\/span>empty data, harmonized<\/span> diverse data units, handled inconsistencies,<\/span> and <\/span>identified<\/span> and<\/span> addressed outliers. “From this competition, we conducted a lot of research and reviewed journals on carbon dioxide emissions to gain new insights,” she said.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The team then created a new variable called engine efficiency, the ratio of the engine and <\/span>cylinder<\/span> variables. Based on various sources, <\/span>Tentan<\/span> Team<\/span> observed that the efficiency of a vehicle’s engine is a crucial factor in CO2 emissions because high engine efficiency can reduce fuel consumption, resulting in lower CO2 emissions.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

“And indeed, this variable reduced the error rate of our model,” Alia concluded. <\/p>\n\n
