Among them, Bacillus species have garnered increasing interest from researchers. These bacteria thrive in various environments such as soil, water, plants, animals, and organic matter.<\/p>\n\n<p>Highlighting this potential, Prof. Dr. Salamun, Drs., MKes, a professor of Applied Microbiology at <a href=\"http:\/\/unair.ac.id\">Universitas Airlangga\u2019s<\/a> Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), delivered his inaugural address on Thursday (May 8, 2025) at the Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR\u2019s MERR-C campus. In his scientific oration, Prof. Salamun underscored the substantial potential of Bacillus bacteria as an eco-friendly raw material for innovative products.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cEnvironmentally friendly, multifunctional products made from Bacillus have highly promising prospects across various sectors. Indonesia\u2019s rich tropical ecosystems could serve as a reservoir for novel Bacillus species with distinct, specialized traits. These innovations may offer sustainable alternatives to harmful synthetic chemicals,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9886babb00953e03aee0ac2f6e5cfc1d\"><strong>Unlocking potential of Bacillus<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>Through his extensive research, Prof. Salamun has identified several promising local Bacillus strains in Indonesia. \u201cOne example is Bacillus thuringiensis BK5.2 and Bacillus mojavensis EG6.4, which can produce natural toxins that effectively eliminate mosquito larvae carrying dengue fever,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Gubes-FST-Kembangkan-Mikroba-sebagai-Bahan-Baku-Produk-Inovasi-Ramah-Lingkungan-2-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"Prof Dr Salamun Drs MKes receives certificate from Prof Dr Mohammas Nasih MT Ak CA, On Thursday , May 8, 2025. (Photo: PKIP UNAIR)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>He added that Bacillus also shows immense promise in agriculture and environmental management. \u201cBacillus subtilis BK7.1, for instance, could be used as a biopesticide\u2014an alternative to chemical pesticides\u2014and as a bioremediator for waste treatment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-883df016b04a6087d9895fc9ee0f3ccc\"><strong>From lab to industry<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>According to Prof. Salamun, the ultimate goal is to transition these microbe-based innovations into scalable, multifunctional industrial products. Achieving this requires both technical and strategic approaches to integrate microbial potential into commercial production pipelines.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis process includes identifying top-performing Bacillus strains, optimizing fermentation techniques, isolating and purifying biotechnological compounds, developing final product formulations, and packaging them for public distribution.
