UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> \u2013 Heribertus Agustinus B. Tena, better known as Officer Hery, stands as a clear example of how Universitas Airlangga<\/a> (UNAIR) graduates can make a powerful difference, particularly in Indonesia\u2019s most remote and underserved areas. The alumnus of UNAIR\u2019s Master’s in Forensic Science program currently serves with the East Manggarai Police Department in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Yet his dedication goes far beyond standard police duties.<\/p>\n\n

Hery believes the people of East Manggarai face many limitations across sectors such as healthcare and transportation, and these challenges call for more than just law enforcement. As a member of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), he feels a deeper responsibility\u2014to uplift and inspire the communities he serves.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cI want to show that the police can be a source of hope in times of hardship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Defining journey<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

One of Hery\u2019s most memorable moments involved traveling hundreds of kilometers to a remote village using only local transport. The journey aimed to help residents in urgent need of healthcare services. He not only volunteered his time and energy but also funded the mission from his own savings\u2014money he had initially set aside to purchase a motorbike. Instead, he used it to hire motorcycle taxis, rent public transport, and buy groceries for local families.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe hardest part is dealing with limited finances and having no personal vehicle,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I believe if you\u2019re committed to a cause, you\u2019ll always find a way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Since being assigned to Operation Peace Cartenz in Papua in January 2024, Hery has remained in contact with residents he supported in East Manggarai. He uses WhatsApp to monitor their health and ensure they continue to receive medical attention.<\/p>\n\n

Guided by transformational values<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Hery attributes much of his community-centered approach to the values he developed during his time at UNAIR, particularly the leadership principles he learned while studying transformational leadership in graduate school.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAs an alumnus of UNAIR , I was taught how to become a change-maker in society. That\u2019s the mindset I bring into my work as a police officer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Hery hopes to continue his social outreach and create lasting benefits for the communities he serves. He also encourages fellow UNAIR graduates and young people in general to use their knowledge to make a positive difference.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cNever grow tired of doing good. Even the smallest act can mean everything to someone in need,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n
