UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> \u2013 Universitas Airlangga<\/a> (UNAIR) continues to make its mark through the achievements of its alumni. Mohammad Kurniadi Koba, a graduate of International Relations at UNAIR, has been appointed Deputy II for Foreign Policy Coordination at Indonesia\u2019s Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. In an interview on Saturday (August 23, 2025), he shared how his academic and professional journey shaped his strategic perspective in protecting Indonesia\u2019s national interests.<\/p>\n\n

Intellectual foundation at UNAIR<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Koba noted that his time at UNAIR gave him a strong intellectual base. He emphasized that his professors and the university\u2019s academic environment encouraged critical discussions and fostered an understanding of global issues from an Indonesian perspective.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cAt UNAIR, I was accustomed to engaging in critical debates. Professors often challenged us through discussions, which trained me to analyze global issues systematically. That foundation became essential when I joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Long career path<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

When asked about the most defining moment in his career, Koba stressed that his success was not the result of a single event but rather a long process.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to identify one specific moment. I see my current role as the result of accumulated experiences\u2014from applying as a diplomat at the Foreign Ministry to earning the trust to serve as Deputy II. Along the way, I learned the value of inter-ministerial coordination and the importance of defending national interests rationally,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n

Skills for Indonesia\u2019s young diplomats<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

According to Koba, young Indonesians who aspire to careers in diplomacy need to build broad knowledge, sharp analytical skills on global issues, and strong command of foreign languages. He added that cross-cultural communication, integrity, and mental resilience are equally critical.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cDiplomacy is not just about speaking well; it requires understanding cultural differences while consistently defending national interests. Positioned between two continents and two oceans, Indonesia faces new challenges every day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Message for UNAIR students<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Koba highlighted the importance of lifelong learning, maintaining integrity, and seizing opportunities with courage. He also underscored the significant roles UNAIR alumni now play in both government and international organizations.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cMany UNAIR graduates hold strategic positions today. That shows the real contribution of Ksatria Airlangga. To UNAIR students, keep learning, hold on to your ideals, and be brave in taking opportunities. Becoming a diplomat means protecting Indonesia\u2019s identity so it stands strong on the global stage,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n

Through the achievements of Mohammad Kurniadi Koba, UNAIR reaffirms its position as an institution that produces leaders who serve the nation both domestically and internationally.<\/p>\n\n
