UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> – The Data Science and Technology Student Association (Himatesda) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR<\/a>), through its Department of Social Affairs and Community Service (Sigma), hosted a flagship initiative called Philanthropy Day 1. Held on Saturday (November 8, 2025) in Manukan Kulon, Surabaya, the event adopted the theme \u201cSmart Digitally: One Movement, Millions of Changes.\u201d Activities included an exercise session for seniors, health education, MSME development workshops, and an engaging talk show.<\/p>\n\n

This program showcases students\u2019 tangible efforts to create positive change in the surrounding community, especially in improving public health and supporting local economic growth. Through this initiative, Himatesda UNAIR aims to deepen collaboration between students and residents to help build community capacity sustainably.<\/p>\n\n

Morning exercise with elderly residents<\/h5>\n\n

The day opened with a group exercise for elderly women in RW 14, which drew enthusiastic participation. From early morning, the courtyard of the village office buzzed with laughter and lively movement as residents followed routines led by Data Science and Technology students. Beyond promoting physical activity, the session strengthened social connections between students and the community. \u201cIt was so lively. It really motivated me to exercise,\u201d one elderly participant said.<\/p>\n

Health education<\/h5>\n\n

Following the exercise, the event continued with a health education session focused on exercise routines suitable for the elderly. Participants learned about the risks of high sugar consumption and the importance of maintaining healthy dietary habits. They also joined a live demonstration on making a nutritious aloe vera drink.<\/p>\n\n

The seniors eagerly sampled their own creations and enjoyed the experience. \u201cThis is very helpful knowledge. I plan to make it at home during fasting,\u201d said Agus, one of the attendees.<\/p>\n\n

The session served as an enjoyable and practical introduction to simple, healthy lifestyle choices. \u201cWe want to show the community that healthy living starts with small steps, like reducing sugar and choosing natural ingredients such as aloe vera,\u201d a Philanthropy Day 1 committee member explained.<\/p>\n\n

MSME digitalization training<\/h5>\n\n

In the afternoon, the program continued with a workshop titled \u201cDigitalization Methods for MSMEs.\u201d Participants learned about product packaging, branding, and using digital tools to broaden their product reach. The session aimed to help MSME owners keep pace with technological advancements so their businesses can grow faster and compete more effectively.<\/p>\n\n

Residents took part actively, showing a strong interest in exploring digital opportunities. They were also guided through creating accounts to register their businesses on platforms such as Tokopedia, Shopee, and TikTok Shop.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe want MSME owners in Manukan Kulon not only to stay afloat in the local market, but also to enter digital marketplaces. The first step is learning to set up accounts and manage online stores independently,\u201d said Tri Garnis Sankar, the talk show speaker.<\/p>\n\n

Participants followed the hands-on instructions, created accounts, and began uploading product photos. Several residents shared that this was their first time realizing how simple it is to open an online store. \u201cI usually only sell through WhatsApp. Turns out, on marketplaces more people can see my products, and I can even ship outside the city,\u201d said Farida, one of the participants.<\/p>\n\n

Inspiring talk show and enthusiastic audience<\/h5>\n\n

The interactive talk show featuring Tri Garnis Sankar offered practical insights and personal stories about building digital-based local businesses. The session inspired many attendees, particularly MSME owners, to continue innovating and adapting to the digital landscape. The flood of questions and audience responses reflected strong community enthusiasm and a desire to learn more.<\/p>\n\n

Collaboration and social responsibility<\/h5>\n\n

Held at the Manukan Kulon village hall and the RW 9 community center, the activities ran smoothly and presented information in a creative and accessible way. Through this initiative, students were able to apply their academic skills while developing a deep sense of social responsibility.<\/p>\n\n

Philanthropy Day highlights Himatesda UNAIR\u2019s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3) and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).<\/p>\n\n

\u201cPhilanthropy is a platform for students to contribute directly to the community by offering long-term, innovative solutions. We hope to continue developing programs that deliver meaningful impact for both residents and students,\u201d said Isma, a committee member from the Sigma Department of Himatesda. With its theme \u201cSmart Digitally: One Movement, Millions of Changes,\u201d Philanthropy Day 1 is expected to serve as a first step toward building a healthier, more adaptive community that embraces digital transformation.<\/p>\n\n
