Liver cancer is a disease with uncontrolled growth of malignant cells in the liver resulting from abnormal cells in the liver (primary) or the spread of cancer from other parts of the body (secondary). In the world of cancer treatment, surgery and chemotherapy are still the main therapeutic methods in addition to prevention methods such as Hepatitis B immunization.<\/p>\n\n<p>According to Prof.\u00a0Win Darmanto, M.Si., Ph.D, a lecturer of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/\">Faculty of Science and Technology<\/a> and his research partner Dr. Suhailah Hayaza, Ph.D, therapeutic drugs have several side effects hemopoietic suppression, limited efficacy, immunotoxicity and drug resistance. This condition then led to the development of new treatment strategies that are non-toxic with a high level of efficacy to treat cancer, which is by controlling the immune system.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cImmunotherapy being developed is the use of herbal plants as an effort to regulate the immune system\u2019s performance of cancer patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"334\" height=\"501\" src=\"http:\/\/210.57.208.200\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Prof-Win.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Prof-Win.jpg 334w, https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Prof-Win-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/><figcaption>Prof. Win Darmanto, M.Si., Ph.D, a lecturer of the Faculty of Science and Technology. (Photo: Personal Document)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>According to him, one of the plants with content that functions as an immunomodulator is the Okra plant. Okra plant or Okra Raw Polysaccharide Extract (ORPE) has the ability to activate the transcription factor nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-\u043aB) from normal cells.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cActivation of NF-\u043aB can increase transcription of genes associated with the production of cytokines needed to activate immune cells, both innate and adaptive immune cells,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<p>Administration of ORPE showed an\u00a0immunosuppressant\u00a0effect\u00a0on macrophages.\u00a0The higher the dose of the extract given, the lower the percentage of macrophages.\u00a0Treg cells are part of the CD4+ T-helper cells whose function is to suppress the immune response and maintain self-tolerance.\u00a0Decreasing Treg cells is one of the keys to successful cancer treatment.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe function of ORPE as an immunostimulant is shown in its ability to increase the activation of Natural Killer cells (NK cells).\u00a0NK cells are part of the\u00a0innate immune\u00a0system\u00a0that can induce tumor cell death,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n<p>The increase in the number of NK cells after ORPE administration, he continued, is expected to increase the death of cancer cells.\u00a0The dual functions or\u00a0dual role\u00a0of ORPE as an immunostimulant or immunosuppressant is a favorable condition and is rarely found in other herbal plants.<\/p>\n\n<p>Therefore, this discovery can be a good foundation for the development of a\u00a0nutraceutical\u00a0that all groups can consume to improve the survival of liver cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n<p>Author: Khefti Al Mawalia<\/p>\n\n<p>Source:<\/p>\n\n<p>Suhailah Hayaza, Sri Puji Astuti Wahyuningsih, Raden Joko Kuncoroningrat Susilo, Saikhu Akhmad Husen, Dwi Winarni, Ruey-An Doong, Win Darmanto. 2021.
