UNAIR NEWS – Fasting in Ramadan is one of the commands of Allah SWT to moslems. The command of Allah SWT is aimed to show moslems’ degree of their piety. Fasting also brings benefits for those who do it, both physical and spiritual benefits.
In the middle of May, Director of Universitas Airlangga Teaching Hospital, Prof. Dr. Nasronudin, dr., Sp.PD, K-PTI, FINASIM., had the opportunity to give explanation on the benefits and virtues of fasting from the medical perspective.
According to Prof. Nasron fasting especially in Ramadan is a mandatory order for moslems. It is in accordance with the command in Qur’an Surat al-Baqarah verse 183. In that verse, he added, it is clear that the purpose of fasting for Allah is to obtain the degree of taqwa.
The benefits of fasting are very good from medical perspective. Prof. Nasron said that fasting will offer changes and the body will adjust, both physically and psychologically.
“There are at least three things that change, metabolism will run a little slower, hormonal activity will be slightly weakened, and immunologically will improve, “he explained.
Prof. Nasron added that immunology is improving because the three systems works naturally non excessively. It will be more stable as it is intended as worship. Moreover, while fasting, people are also more active to recite Qur’an, perform tarawih prayers, and other worship.
“Thus, humans can worship solemnly and their immunology will be more stable. The stress hormones will decrease and the immune system cells will be more resilient, ” added the Professor of Faculty of Medicine UNAIR.
Furthermore, in the physical system will also be adjusted. The heart, liver, and kidneys of humans will be more stable. In addition, the digestive tract also has more time to rest.
“Hence, people with gastritis will also recover,” he added.
Prof. Nasron emphasizes that if the kidneys are stable, the gastritis can be healed, the sugar level stabilize, and fasting can bring calmness.
“Fasting does not mean we stop working, eventhough it is allowed to reduce the work. I hope everything can keep going as usual, only the reduced intensity of work. So through it, we get the rewards from work and fasting, “he concluded.
