FH Academician Initiates Plan for Business and Human Rights National Action

UNAIR NEWS – Academician of  Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Law, Iman Prihandono, Ph.D., participated in the national action plan (RAN) formulation for business and human rights.

The RAN drafting which was set forth in the principles of Business and Human Rights guidance in Indonesia was launched by the National Commission on Human Rights and Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (ELSAM), Friday , June 6 at Hotel Sari Pan Pacific, Jakarta.

“Indonesia is the only country in ASEAN that has a RAN for business and human rights issues. This event coincides with the sixth year of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights endorsed by the United Nations Human Rights Council on June 16, 2011, “said Iman who is also Chairman of the International Law Department FH UNAIR .

Iman said, the RAN drafting for Business and Human Rights is based on the pattern disparity of state, markets, and society relations. Stronger market power than state power is reflected in the various conflicts of human rights abuses in the management of natural resources.

Such action plan is needed to implement the guiding principles of the United Nations related to business and human rights interests in Indonesia. “Referring to the RAN that has been drafted, the government can make more coherent policy by coordinating through inclusive policy-making process among ministries,” said Iman.

In the event, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs AM Fachir said that RAN Business and Human Rights that has been formulated is a form of government’s seriousness in respecting human rights. The same thing was also stated by the expert staff of Deputy V of Presidential Office Ifdhal Kasim.

Iman hopes that the government and businessmen can make RAN Business and Human Rights that have been prepared as a significant step to conduct corporate human rights implementation audit.

“Although it is stated in Komnas HAM’s decision instrument, it does not necessarily reduce the importance of this RAN. RAN can be a reference for the government and business practitioners to take concrete steps such as by mandating the implementation of corporate human rights audits and providing recovery and effective access to the affected communities, “Iman told UNAIR NEWS .
