UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has graduated its dentists and dental specialists. Dean of FKG Dr. R. Darmawan Setijanto, drg., M.Kes, accompanied by Vice Dean I, II and III awarded certificate to each dentist and dental specialist just conferred.
The conferment and oath taking was held in Graha BIK IPTEK-DOK, Faculty of Medicine (FK) UNAIR, on Tuesday, July 26. It was attended by the Director of Dental and Oral Hospital Prof. Coen, faculty staff and families.
There were 47 dentists and 10 dental specialists conferred in that occasion. Five of the specialists were from Department of Oral Medicine, and the other five were from Department of Orthodontics.
In his address, Darmawan said that FKG UNAIR has contributed greatly to improve dental and oral healthcare in Indonesia. Since 1948, FKG has graduated 5,143 dentists.
“Dentistry education started in 1928, but the data of the graduates was recorded as of 1948. FKG has produced 5,143 dentists. It means we have contributed greatly about 18.76% out of 23 thousand of national dentists,” said Darmawan followed with a round of applause.
He added that among the graduates, from 47 people, 8 of them have succeeded in finishing dentist profession program in only 3 semesters.
Regarding dental specialists, FKG UNAIR has graduated 799 specialist since 1990. It was the starting point of dental specialist program in UNAIR. In percentage, FKG UNAIR has produced 27.5% of total 2,905 dental specialists in Indonesia.
According to Darmawan, the ratio of dentist and dental specialist compared to Indonesian population is at 1:9000. It is small compared to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam which is at 1:2000.
“Whether it is enough or not, depends on the performance of each dentist. I encourage you to maintain good name of the alma mater, hold the science adjustment, medical ethics and esthetics,” he added.
The director of RSGM UNAIR Prof. Coen in his address added that the graduates should always pay attention to the medical equipments’ hygiene and sanitary. It must be done to prevent infectious disease transmission to patients. (*)
