UNAIR NEWS – For some students, coming to an international conference is an invaluable experience, especially when it is held abroad and they are in a same panel with other presenters which are mostly people with master or doctoral degrees. This is what is experienced by nine International Relations (Hi) students, Universitas Airlangga when they participated in International Conference on Advancement of Development Administration (ICADA) at National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) Bangkok, Thailand.
“The discussion panel and presentation here were not very different from what we learn in campus, the topic was not different too, so at least we could follow it,” said Eric Wicaksono, the eighth semester student of HI UNAIR.
There was an interesting discussion for HI students when Kobsak Pootrakool, Ph. D., Vice Minister for Office of the Prime Minister, gave his keynote-speech on latest Thailand development and region integration in globalization era with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. This discussion was an special information for HI students, especially on South East Asia studies. The discussion panel also discussed about ASEAN and Globalization: New Paradigm, Interdependency, Democracy, and Accountability.
“The discussion on this topic was interesting, and connected to the paper we made for presentation,” said Reza Felayati, the sixth semester student of HI UNAIR.
The conference held from May 26 to May 28 was then followed with best paper presentation either from individual or group category. The nine students presented sixpapers with different topics. They were: Human Rights Violation towards Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia; Community Based Tourism as Strategic Way to Enhance Economic Growth in Banyuwangi, Indonesia; ASEAN-EU Regional Comparison; Cultural, Ideological and Diversity Issues; Indonesia’s Role in Fostering Maritime Interconnectivity in Southeast Asia; Role of Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia for ASEAN Economic Community: Empowering Economy and Solve the Poverty; dan Digital Divide in ASEAN: Analyzing Regional Integration through Information and Communication Technology Development.

“This is the first international conference I participate, I was nervous at first during presentation, but then I can adjust,” said Noviawati Lesmana, the second semester of HI UNAIR.
The conference was attended by many presenters from thirteen countries. From Indonesia there were thirteen presenters, and nine of them were UNAIR students. According to Ahmad Safril, HI UNAIR lecturer, students’ involvement in this International Conference was itself an achievement.
“I am proud of the students, they had done their best to present their papers,” he said.(*)
