UNAIR NEWS – International Relations Student Association (HIMAHI) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held another UN conference simulation called Airlangga Youth Model United Nations (AYMUN). The theme of discussion was “The Evolving Maritime World”. In the simulation the latest international issues were discussed to provide solutions of the global problems. There were three models of council, WTO, UNEP and UNSC.

Held in Crown Prince Hotel Surabaya, the event held from June 3 to June 5 had varied programs, such as panel discussion, city tour, conference simulation, resolution drafting and award ceremony.

“The conference this time discussed about international issues and resolution mechanism on maritime development issues,” said Tara Wardhani, one of the committees.

In the discussion panel of the first day, AYMUN participants were informed on border issues, arctic ice melting, and other issues on maritime development. They were presented by the experts, Prof. Dr. Makarim Wibisono, MA-IS. MA, Gracia Paramitha, S. Hub. Int., M. Si, and Commander of Guspurla Koarmatim TNI First Admiral ING Ariawan, S. E., M. M.

In the opening session, Prof Makarim Wibisono said to the participants of AYMUN that as youth they have to knowledgeable on information related to Indonesian diplomacy, especially on South China Sea dispute.

“It’s time for young generation to carry on Indonesian diplomacy,” said the professor of UNAIR International Relations.

On the same day, AYMUN participants were tasked to present causing factors of the issues and the general position of country on the issue. In the afternoon, there was a city tour session to historical places in Surabaya such as Heroes Monument, Majapahit Hotel, Submarine Monument and Bamboo Spear Monument.

“The panel discussion on the first day was useful to give further understanding before they continued to simulate UN conference,” said Btari Istighfarrah, as the head of the AYMUN commitee.

On second day, participants focused on the conference simulation which discussed the resolutions of the issues. In this session, the conference participants could propose solutions to issues which involved their countries’ interests. In each council conference, they showed enthusiasm, as they debated over their countries’ interests on maritime issues.

The third day, the conference was directed to a resolution draft formulation on the discussed issues. The drafts formulation then followed with voting session to choose which draft to implement as the final result of the conference. The conference then closed with a party held in Mahameru Restaurant Surabaya. The closing session also awarded participants who carried out their role of a country appropriately and diplomatically.
