UNAIR NEWS – Environmental and health hygiene in orphanages (PA) is still largely ignored and it does not meet health requirements in general. From that fact, FISIP Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students want to encourage healthy lifestyle at the orphanage. They conducted the community service in Millennium Orphanage, in Tenggulunan Village, Candi subdistrict, Sidoarjo.
The four students of FISIP UNAIR are Sofie Egita Vermalia, Sri Ayu Dinda Lestari, Lestari Dyah Ningtyas, and Weka Nastiti.
Described by Sofie as the leader, Millennium Orphanage has accommodated orphans, abandoned children, and dhuafa . In terms of building, it is a unique orphanage with Balinese and Islamic architecture, unfortunately cleanliness and health is not its best part.
As explained by Ustadz Muhammad Sholeh Effendie, the Millennium Orphanage has not yet able to make the program towards the ideal because it lacks of dissemination on healthy lifestyle in accordance with the requirements in general. The presence of UNAIR students is expected to change the orphanage for the better and healthier.
The activity of Sofie and friends was then written as a proposal of Student Creativity Program (PKM) entitled “KAPAL (Millenium Orphans Health) to Promote the Importance of Healthy Living” . This concept is expected to be a follow-up program by Millenium Orphanage in Sidoarjo.
Under the guidance of a lecturer, the proposal “KAPAL” passed the Dikti assessment, so it was entitled to obtain development grants from 2016-2017 PKM program from Kemenristekdikti.
Sofie and friends hoped that this activity will eliminate the “viral” issues in this orphanage that it gets some bad promotion with bad parenting, poor environment, and poor health so it does not meet the criteria in general.
“That circumstance encouraged us to make this program to improve the importance of healthy living and cleanliness of the surrounding environment,” said Sri Ayu Dinda Lestari added.
Children empowerment in the orphanage was done through a program that has been prepared by the Team of PKMM UNAIR students , they provide education to the owners and administrators of the orphanage, as well as to the children of the orphanage.
The lessons presented were about everyday life. For example how to brush your teeth correctly and properly, wash your hands properly, cleaning the environment together with the orphanage officials and the orphans.
“We also provide learning through watching videos of healthy lifestyles and how to keep clean in their own environment,” added Sofie Vermalia, team leader.
The program provides a positive response for the orphanage which has helped the orphanage children in improving their own health and the environment. (*)
