UNAIR NEWS – Career and Entrepreneurship Development Center (PPKK) Universitas Airlangga organized ‘Journalistic Career Program’ as an introduction to journalism to students interested in careers of that field. It is a part of Career Talk events as an introduction to post-campus world for UNAIR students.
On Thursday, May 24, held in PPKK Building, there was a presentation by Maksum, Drs., M.Si, alumnus of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNAIR. He has been a chairman of the Board of Directors of Jawa Pos Institute of Proautonomy (JPIP). He explained the matter of recruitment in the printed media, especially Jawa Pos, and an overview of how the activities of journalists.
Before being a journalist, there is a selection process. In Jawa Pos, usually during an open recruitment, the participants can reach 200 people. The first test is usually easy to pass and most of them usually pass it.
“The first test is a written test, most applicants are smart. No one is not smart. So, easy to pass this test, “he said.
But, in the second test on foreign language, many failed. Among the initial 200 people, only 50 people pass. This is due to the needs of journalists, especially in Jawa Pos as it is related to passports as well.
Anyone accepted in Jawa Pos, on the first day of entry, he must have a passport because the assignment abroad could be anytime given for example when suddenly important North and South Korean negotiation was held.
“Once accepted, the new journalists will go through apprenticeship for three months. They will work with senior journalists. They cover the same event, but the writing should not be the same. They can write about anything, “he said.
From the apprenticeship, they will not be accepted all because, for one year there are four times recruitments. For each batch, no more than five people will qualify. This happens because many cannot survive the work rhythm.
Maksum explained, a career in this journalism can not be preached, but transmitted. If you are interested, you should cultivate writing skills from the start. Use the opportunity in the student press agency (LPM) and UNAIRNEWS as there is no specific major to be accepted.
“Who can write well will be received. But you must go all the way. Do not only be there to try, whether you are accepted no not is fine. No, this is serious, “said Maksum. (*)
