Kartini, Women, and Industrial Revolution 4.0

UNAIR NEWS – Since the emergence of gender equality campaign by R.A. Kartini in 1879, the role of women in various realms of life is increasingly visible. Most recently, there are many inspiring female figures in the public sphere. For example, Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, as the world’s best minister in 2017, Minister of Fisheries and Marine, Susi Pudjiastuti, and Mayor of Tri Rismaharini Surabaya.

In its development, the various social turmoil in different periods of time also influenced the appearance of these figures. The latest, Industrial Revolution 4.0 becomes the next challenge especially for women.

According to Professor of Management Science Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Airlangga Prof. Dr. Anis Eliyana, SE, M.Si., socio-economic changes such as the Industrial Revolution 4.0 cannot be avoided. Basically, Indonesian people, especially women, have been involved.

“Maybe noone here who wakes up without checking their smartphones and seeing what is happening to the world through the device,” she said in Professors’ Innovation Exposition entitled “The Role of Women in the Millenial Era”.

Entrepreneurship becomes something that women should explore and experience at the moment. Particularly in the effort to be involved in building the economy and fostering prosperity for the community.

It is in line with the idea of women’s struggle voiced by Kartini long ago. They were fighting ignorance, fighting against poverty, and fighting injustice. The war on poverty through economic development is very important especially to create community welfare.

” Enterpreneurship is the process of creativity and innovation in promoting changes by exploiting the opportunities and resources to generate added value for themselves and others, ” she said.

Creativity and usefulness are values that must be highlighted. Socio-cultural developments today have given unlimited and easy access to anything. However, entrepreneurship must be followed with leadership.

“Both are closely related like two sides of  a coin, “said Prof. Anis at the Amerta Hall, UNAIR Management Office.

Leadership according to her is about the courage to take decisions, to plunge in the world of entrepreneurship, also to about having visions of the future.

“We must take advantage of Industrial Revolution 4.0 momentum to make, deliver, and create added values in order to have a wider impact,” she said.

“Indonesia is the largest e-commerce market in ASEAN. For the first time, Indonesia surpassed Thailand and Singapore with a transaction value of USS 1.1 billion in 2014. The potential growth of e-commerce Indonesia is growing as the population increases and economic growth. It must be used well, “she said. (*)
