Lailatul Mikrozia, FST Best Graduate, Interested in Petroleum Microbiology

UNAIR NEWS – Interested in the field of microbiology and petroleum industry, this graduate of Universitas Airlangga’s Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) researched “Biodegradation of oil sludge with variation of pollutant concentration and incubation time on Bioslurry reactor”. Lailatul Mikrozia, finally graduated from Environmental Science and Technology as the best graduate of bachelor’s degree with 3.63 GPA.

In her research, the woman known as Mikro explained that in oil industry there are various kinds of hazardous waste, one of them is oil sludge, so it should be handled well before being discharged into the environment. One of the processing system uses an environmentally friendly consortium of bacteria.

“Hopefully this research can be an alternative to the use of bacterial consortium in oil sludge processing, especially for the oil industry and to avoid polluted water,” she said.

Meeting new people in college as well as having time-consuming tasks are exciting experiences for Mikro. She realized that she would miss them in the end of college.

“During research, the preparation was quite draining, as she had to stay in the lab from the morning to evening and the field of microbiology requires extraordinary attention and patience. Moreover, the bacteria was contaminated once and the had to repeat the procedure all over again, ” he said.

Furthermore, she also said that there was no special tricks to make the best graduate achievement. She admitted that she just managed her time well, focused on the lectures, and made a long summary before the test.

“I remain grateful to God for this achievement. The most important thing is to manage time well, do your best, continue to dream, keep trying, and never give up, ” she said. (*)
