Making Money from Animal Waste

UNAIR NEWS – Urban waste is a problem we should not underestimate. The industrial waste, household waste and animal waste often cause environmental problem. A professor from Reproductive Science Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Airlangga,  Prof. Dr. Herry Agoes Hermadi can exploit the animal waste as a new way to earn money.

As a researcher and lecturer of FKH UNAIR, he was challenged to contribute in solving environmental problem. “The waste from slaughterhouse such as rumen when it is wrung will produce bio fermentor liquid. It is useful to lessen the odor of the septic tank and even to reduce the waste without being extracted,” said Herry.

Rumen extract can be used to destroy waste problem faced by the city of Surabaya. Based on observation, fifty percent of population defecates in the river. “They have open defecation toilet not closed defecation. It means they direct their waste to the river,” he said.

Furthermore, bio fermentor can also be used to for feed fermentation. If it is mixed with with NPK fertilizer and sprayed to plants, they will grow well.

The other waste we can exploit is the blood of the slaughtered animals. In a day, a slaughterhouse can kill hundreds of cows. The  blood can be used as animal feed and have economic value.

“A cow can produce 20 to 30 liters of blood.  If there are 100 cows, it would be such a waste if we couldn’t use it,” said Herry, a field lecturer for Community Service Program – Learning Together with the Community (KKN-BBM) UNAIR.
