MOBILE APP DETECTING PRE-ECLAMPSIA SUPPRESSES MATERNAL MORTALITY RATE

UNAIR NEWS – The high maternal mortality rate in Indonesia due to pre-eclampsia, which is 359 cases per 100,000 pregnancies, is still very alarming. This is the second leading cause of maternal death. To help reducing the mortality rate, five students of Universitas Airlangga succeeded in making mobile-based app. With this android-based app early detection of pre-eclampsia is accessible and easily detected.

The five UNAIR students  innovating through Invention Student Creativity Program (PKM-KC) are Shervil Kagayaita Sayko, Rida Mahrani Harahap, Sita Aulia, Editia Yuniawati (from FK Midwifery program) and Mardhatilah Syauqina Putri (Faculty of Nursing).

Pre – eclampsia is a syndrome characterized by an increased blood pressure and proteinuria happens in the second trimester of pregnancy. Although it recovers in the postnatal period, pre-eclampsia pregnancies are classified as high-risk pregnancies as a result of complications if pre – eclampsia symptoms are not treated. For example the presence of disorders of the cardiovascular system, premature birth, seizures, until the death of the fetus and mother.

According to Shervil Kagayaita Sayko, the mobile application was chosen because Indonesia is one of the countries with a large smartphone users , and users are equally distributed from all ages and economic status. In addition, android-based apps are the most popular because it is open-source , accessible and open to development.

Another reason of choosing mobile application, after studying 30 articles and journals, it is known what are the biggest risk and causing factors of pre-eclampsia. Risk factors were then questioned in the first screening. Then scoring determination and and the design of application content was followed by the process of the application development.

Described by Shervil, after the application is made her team did the process of web service and web application development. Then there was obstetricians and gynecologists expertise test so the application is capable of diagnosing. The language in the app was also refined by a linguist and by technology experts for the worthiness of the app to be published.

“After all the expertise tests are completed, we register this application to PE-Detector Hosting Domain and then launch it to Play store,” explained Shervil.

From experiments, it is known that this application helps pregnant women to recognize the symptoms and signs of pre-eclampsia constructed through subjective data and objective data. Subjective data includes pregnancy characteristics that can be directly filled in by the pregnant woman itself. Such as age, education, parity (frequency pregnancy), adherence to pregnancy visit, medical history and hypertension to anemia factor that can aggravate the risk of complications due pre-eclampsia.

Shervil explained that the objective data was obtained from Body Mass Index calculation , Roll-Over Tests and Mean Arterial Pressure through examination by health personnel. This data will then be calculated and categorized into a risk value. Risk value will help the medical personnel as early detection from the beginning to provide the necessary intervention so it will not be pre – eclampsia or even eclampsia.

“We really hope with this application can help pregnant women and health workers to recognize the risk of pre-eclampsia early on, so it can reduce the incidence of pre-eclampsia and minimize the risk of pregnancy complications later in life, which will make Indonesia free pre-eclampsia, ” said Shervil Kagayaita Sayko. (*)
