Nature Based Hand Sanitizer From Calabur Leaves

UNAIR NEWS – Utilizing the abundance of calabur trees which contain saponin, tannin and flavonoid in their leaves, students of  Universitas Airlangga uses them as material of hand sanitizer or antiseptic preventing bacterial or bacteriostatic growth.

Moreover, the use of hand sanitizers among students and society, today is not new. The use of hand sanitizer or hand antiseptic has become habit in the wider community, because using hand sanitizer is practical and has the same effect as washing hands.

Commonly used antiseptics (in the market) are composed with alcohol. Alcohol is an active substance in most hand sanitizers. However, excessive use of alcohol can lead to dry the skin.

Students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Airlangga want to innovate to make hand sanitizer from calabur tree leaves. The inovative students are Maulita Maharani Ulfa (2014), Nur Lailatul Fitrotun Nikmah (2014), Shendy Canadya Kurniawan (2014), Gayoh Mahardika Wan Mahsuri (2015), and Nandana Abimantra (2015).

“Because saponin, tannin and flavonoid inhibits bacterial or bacteriostatic growth, and it is also present in calabur tree leaves,” said Maulita Maharani Ulfa, the team leader.

This creativity is then written as an Entrepreneurship Student Creativity Program (PKM-K) proposal, and successfully passed the selection by Dikti, thus obtaining developmental fund from Kemenristekdikti for PKM 2016-2017program.

Maulita continued, the calabur leaves extract based on natural protection also participated in the ecoficiency effort of the tree itself. The intended ecoficiency is to maximize the potential of this relatively large tree, without damaging the ecosystem.

“The advantages we offer from this product is the use of 0% chemicals, edible, so it is safe for all ages,” said Maulita.

By PKMK Team, this product is named “Calabura Septic”. It is offered in two packs of spray bottle size 60 ml and 100 ml. The price is affordable, Rp 10,000 for the 60 ml packaging and Rp 18,000 for 100 ml the packaging.  (*)
