Optical Fiber Sensor Development as a Necessity

UNAIR NEWS – Technological development of Optical Fiber Sensor is inevitable. It is an applicative and fundamental technology on daily basis of our life. All this time, we imported products with this technology.

The Optical Fiber Sensor is actualized in a laser form potential for medical treatment, chemical analysis and applied physics necessity. The laser beam can scan the vibration of the targeted object so the condition can be detected. The real example shown from a laser technology which can detect heart beats. It can also be used to identify the chemicals contained in the liquid or substance targeted. It is also capable of scanning location which can be only penetrated by the laser beam.

The use of laser brings more advantages compared to other method as it is non contact method, non-electrical and more flexible because of its lightness and effectiveness.

One of the experts of UNAIR who studies this field is Prof. Dr. Moh. Yasin, M.Si., a Professor of Optical Physics from Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). “There are a lot of devices around us and most of them are imported when we often use them. Therefore, Indonesia should focus on developing this technology so we can be independent. Not only be the market for other countries,” said Yasin in his office in the middle of May.

Those devices are camera lenses, medical equipment to detect internal organs’ condition, microscopes and many other devices. The man who often reviews books and scientific journals said that to achieve this independent aspiration, all elements of society must collaborate. They are academicians, businessmen or private parties, government, and the communities.

Yasin said that that Optical Physics is the branch of Physics which studies of the generation of electromagnetic radiation, the properties of that radiation, and the interaction of that radiation with matter. This interaction was based on optical phenomena such as reflection, refraction, transmission and dispersion.

Optical fiber sensor (SSO) is a part of optical sensor which uses optical fiber as the sensor for physical changes happening. The point is, there is a laser shot to a medium and reflected. The reflection is modified and the information is dispersed.

Even though the method explained by Prof. Yasin is simple, there are devices invented with the same method and sold expensive. A product even priced at Rp billion.

Regarding the method explained previously, the Professor who won a award as the academician with the most publications in UNAIR in 2015 is currently developing a prototype with SSO device. This prototype is expected to develop medical and industrial fields. He even hoped that in 2020 there is an SSO system as an important foundation in developing SSO technology for medical and industrial application.

According to Prof. Yasin, SSO technology brings a lot of advantages either for medical field or industry. In industrial field, SSO can be used for a lot of applications such as temperature, vibration, pressure, straining, electricity and other uses.

“One of its uses in medical field is to detect breast cancer early on. It can also be used to measure the heart rate,” he said.

Great Achievements

Prof. Yasin has made scientific publications in some international journals. From 2008 to 2016, there are at least 49 scientific articles focused on Optical Fiber Sensor (SSO) published in Scopus indexed journal. For his excellent contributions, he was just appointed in 146 Role Model Figure in Science development based on the website www.indonesia2045.com. He was at the 63rd rank.

In 2015, he was awarded for the most and excellent publications in Universitas Airlangga. He has been awarded by international publishing company, Emerald Publisher for Highly Recommended Paper Award category in 2013. He was ranked second from 40 articles written by around the world.

In 2007, Yasin developed optical fiber shifting sensor application. The research is being developed and has written more publications. Yasin also got Competition Grants on Optic Fiber. The research was titled “Application of Micro Sensor Shifting with 1000 Optical Package to detect Calsium.

To improve the application so it achieves high performance optimization, Prof. Yasin will improve the sensor stability and improve sensitivity on the laser through laser wavelength synergy of the whitelight.
