The Delegation of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga, made another achievement at the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. The delegation consisted of Alexander (2020), Nabiilah Yaasmiin Lihawa (2021), Delfi Nilarosa Alfiana (2021), Leony Amanda Mutiara Sitohang (2021), Tanaya Anindhita Vala (2020), Axel Cross (2019), Michael Christian Budianto (2019), Finkha Triana (2022), Saniyah El Ismah (2022), Alldeira Lucky Syawalayesha (2022). Nisrina Mumpuni Eurikinasih (2022) won the 2nd Runner Up title at the Indonesian National Rounds. In addition, they also won the 2nd Best Combined Memorials and 2nd Best Respondent Memorials, Alexander won the Best Oralist title, and Delfi Nilarosa won the 2nd Best Oralist title.
The competition will be held on 4-5 February 2023 for the preliminary and 11 February 2023 for the advanced rounds. The Jessup competition was held in a hybrid manner, where the preliminary rounds were held online via Zoom Meeting, and the advanced rounds were held offline at Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung. Thanks to the success of Alexander and his team in becoming one of the four teams with the highest ranking in the Indonesian National Rounds, they will advance to the next round, namely the International Rounds, which will be held on 8 – 15 April 2023 in Washington DC, USA.
Of course, this is not the first time the Jessup FH UNAIR team has won and advanced to the international round. As the team leader, Alexander said that preparation was needed to face this most prestigious competition among international law activists. In this competition, Alexander’s team received a case consisting of four claims, namely the legality of self-defense actions against non-state entities and civil and property attacks, the legitimacy of the employment and transfer of prisoners of war, the legality of unilateral economic sanctions, and the legal consequences of failure dispose of hazardous waste.
Alexander said that Jessup’s preparations started in September 2022. Then, they prepared for the collection of memorials in January 2023 and oral pleading in February 2023.
“So the preparation is around four months for the memorial submission and five months for oral pleading. Of course, it cannot be denied that we also experienced difficulties, especially since this competition was considered prestigious. The substance is also quite challenging,” said Alexander.
Even so, they were pleased when they were announced as one of the four best national teams. They are grateful because they can advance to the next round, namely the international round. It was not easy for a team of members who knew each other to win 3rd place at the national level.
“We faced ups and downs together; maybe that made us know each other better. We are also delighted to be able to win third place in the National Rounds. As they say, hard work always pays off,” said Alexander.
In closing, Alexander conveyed messages and tips and tricks for the Jessup team for next year. He advised to not give up because Jessup was not an easy competition. The Jessup competition requires extensive research, teamwork, and time management. One of the remarkable tricks adopted by the Jessup team this year is confidence is the key.
“Especially for good teamwork, in my opinion, that is the most important tip in maintaining victory. The workload of the Jessup competition is heavy, so it can only be passed well if the team members are united. In addition, we also have to be confident in the team’s ability. We believe that our team is the best. Having a confident mindset like this will help overcome anxiety and help members compete optimally. Always have faith in ourselves,” Alexander concluded.
