LEAP SYMPOSIUM: Strengthening FH UNAIR Collaboration with the Faculty of Law Maastricht University

Law constantly changes from time to time, making it dynamic according to the times. This shows that legal higher education should also move in a more advanced direction. It is also imperative that higher education in law must be carried out with high-quality standards by paying attention to professional moral integrity. This is the background for holding Legal Education, Ethics, and Professionalism as part of the Orange Knowledge Program (LEAP-OKP). The program was driven by the Faculty of Law, Airlangga University, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University, which involved law faculties from various universities from eastern Indonesia, such as Trunojoyo Madura University, Mulawarman University, Halu Oleo University, Nusa Cendana University, and Borneo Tarakan University.

The program which has been going on since 2019, has reached its final point with the holding of the LEAP Symposium at the Faculty of Law Maastricht University on 7 – 11 November 2022. This activity was attended directly by a delegation from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga led by Dr. Maradona, S.H., LL.M, as Deputy Dean III for Publication Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, as well as delegates from each partner university. Through an opportunity, Dr. Maradona, S.H., LL.M said that the peak of the activity would be on November 9 2022 with an agenda of presenting the achievements and hopes of the LEAP-OKP program, which had been held for at least the last three years. According to him, the program has provided benefits for developing legal higher education in Indonesia. Starting from more than sixty problem-based learning modules that have been implemented, learning applications from Airlangga Legal Education Center (ALEC), access to international journals through HeinOnline and Oxford Academic, as well as providing problem-based learning and moot court learning.

Overall, the program funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Nuffic is very satisfying and has a positive impact. The Faculty of Law of Maastricht University and the five partner universities are undoubtedly satisfied with the achievements of this program. They are determined to submit a new program if Nuffic or the Dutch Government provides an opportunity for the next few years. The symposium then ended with a discussion and exploration of cooperation which was marked by the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University, represented by Professor Jan Smits as the Dean, along with the five other partner universities.
