SUMMER SCHOOL 2024 DAY 1

Berita UNAIR Pascasarjana, Senin, 03 Juni 2024  – Day one of the 4th Summer School “Multidisciplinary Approach to Global Crisis Mitigation” commenced with a series of insightful speeches and lectures aimed at addressing global crises through interdisciplinary collaboration. The event saw participation from 59 foreign participants hailing from Pakistan, Malaysia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, China, India, Yemen, Afghanistan, Russia, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Sierra Leone, Botswana, Sudan, and Madagascar. Additionally, 42 participants from the Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga joined the event, along with 17 instructors from both Indonesia and abroad.

The event began with a welcome speech by Prof. Badri Munir Sukoco, S.E., MBA., Ph.D, Director of the Postgraduate School at Universitas Airlangga. Prof. Badri emphasized the critical relevance of this theme in the current post-COVID-19 era. He highlighted the necessity for lawmakers, regulators, and society to adapt to new realities, formulate new policies, rebuild economies, and ensure good governance. Addressing the disruptions caused by global geopolitical tensions, he noted how conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the South China Sea are exacerbating challenges like food and energy inflation alongside ongoing environmental issues. Prof. Badri expressed hope that this summer school would inspire research and collaboration to recover stronger and sustainably.

Following this, Prof. Muhammad Miftahussurur, dr., M.Kes., Sp.PD-K.GEH., Ph.D., FINASIM, Vice Rector of Universitas Airlangga for Internationalization, Digitalization, and Information, celebrated the success of previous summer schools since 2021. This year’s focus, he said, was on mitigating global crises through a multidisciplinary approach, aiming to unlock new potentials for global crisis mitigation. He extended gratitude to the organizers, sponsors, and participants for their contributions.

The summer school continued with a series of guest lectures, beginning with Dr. Ifthekhar Ahmed, Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He presented on “Multidisciplinary Approach to Global Crisis Mitigation: Integrating Diverse Disciplines for Comprehensive Solutions.” Dr. Ahmed stressed the importance of a multidisciplinary approach given the interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental factors in global crises. He outlined the roles of various disciplines—from environmental science and public health to economics and political science—in mitigating crises. His second topic, “The Crisis of Urbanisation: Disaster Risk and Resilience in Cities of the Asia-Pacific Region,” discussed the challenges of urbanization, including urban flooding, demographic pressures, and the need for comprehensive urban planning.

Next, Jengchun Victor Chen, Ph.D, Distinguished Professor at the National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, explored “Building Consumer Engagement in Live Streaming on Social Media: A Comparison of Facebook and Instagram Live.” His study revealed how different characteristics of these platforms influence consumer engagement and purchasing decisions, highlighting the unique interactivity and engagement patterns on each platform.

Finally, Duncan R. Smith, Associate Professor at Mahidol University, Thailand, addressed “Mosquito Transmitted Viruses: Current Status and the Predicted Effects of Global Climate Change.” He provided an overview of the current transmission of mosquito-borne viruses in Thailand and Indonesia and warned of the broader distribution of these viruses due to climate change. He emphasized the need for sustained anti-mosquito programs to combat vector-borne diseases effectively.

The summer school aimed to foster interactive learning and idea exchange among global students and early career practitioners, guided by international and Indonesian experts, to find solutions for the global post-pandemic crisis. Through this multidisciplinary approach, participants are expected to develop comprehensive, innovative solutions to the complex challenges facing our world today.
