UNAIR NEWS – After carrying out the mandate as Universitas Airlangga Vice Rector for Research and Development (2015-2020), Prof. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, Ir., M.Si., Ph.D. returned to serve the faculty as Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences UNAIR for 2020-2025. Previously, in 2009-2015 Prof. Amin was Vice Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences UNAIR.

His career started when he worked in a pond in Situbondo, then moved to Banyuwangi after graduation. In 1994, Prof. Amin became 13th lecturer at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) UNAIR. He then continued his Masters at Brawijaya University in the end of 2000 with a JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion Science) scholarship at Sugashima Marine Biological Laboratory. His research topic was exploration of marine resources, especially sea snakes, taking the protein from their venom to prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Prof. Amin then continued his doctorate at Nagasaki University in the field of marine resource utilization in 2002. Then, he was named Professor on Seaweed by studying the active ingredients of several types of seaweed to prevent Red Tide Diseases.

Smart Biotechnopreneurship Innovation

Regarding the future development strategy and inspiration for Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Prof. Amin initiates the Smart Biotechnopreneurship Innovation program, a six strategy package. The first is reinforcement of a healthy organization.

“This reinforcement is of human resources, international standard governance, and infrastructure,” he said.

Second, expanding the Global Networking for Global Partnership. Third, optimizing knowledge on entrepreneurial abilities. Entrepreneur -based courses are developed so that students are able to create start-ups in the marine fisheries sector, especially for undergraduate and master’s degrees.

“Aquaculture undergraduate program has been accredited by ASIIN, the achievement must be of international standard. Then, aim for a research center for funding by actively cooperating with overseas experts, as well as community service collaboration with international standards, “he said.

Fourth, focus on choosing credible opportunities to achieve targets in accordance with UNAIR competences. Fifth, exploring the potential of the faculty, and sixth, managing systems and teams to achieve main goals.

National Best and International Targets

Prof. Amin aims FPK UNAIR to become The Big Five Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences in Indonesia and the QS World University Rankings by Subject. According to him, an improvement in intellectual capital is needed to make FPK reach Top 5 Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences  in Indonesia and QS World University Rankings by Subject, accredited A by BAN-PT and acknowledged by international academic associations.

The fast-paced digitalization requires a collaborative program between industries in the multinational arena called the Industry-Academia Collaboration Program (IACP). Later, it will become the backbone for enriching the student learning process.

“Later we will link & match a strong relationship with multinational companies in the marine fisheries sector,” explained Prof. Amin.

“It includes optimizing the achievements of Marine Station as the teaching industry and start up business incubator. And, continuing the internship program that all FPK UNAIR students usually do, “he added.

Fishery Business Program

Prof. Amin sees fishery-based micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and exporters in Indonesia need to be improved through the Fisheries Business School (FBS). Providing insight on Digital Marketing, entrepreneur finance, consumer behavior understanding, and intellectual property law are very necessary in preparing graduates. Prof. Amin also pursues the establishment of a new program in Fisheries Business with an MBA qualification (equivalent to a Masters in Management).

“It’s possible to be realized in the 5th or 10th year,” he said.

“It’s still being studied first, looking at the Fishery Business system in America, Moscow, India and Norway. Hopefully graduates can be involved in the fisheries business, both with a significant contribution in the government and private sector, then we can declare the FBS, ” he hoped. (*)
