UNAIR lecturer explains two sides of quiet quitting

UNAIR NEWS – Quiet quitting has been trending just recently. The practice of limiting the amount of efforts one gives at work has become a new trend among Gen Z and millennials.

Lecturer of Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Psychology, Reza Lidia Sari SPsi MSi explained that the quiet quitting rejects the hustle culture, which stresses the importance of high dedication to work.

“Quiet quitting is the opposite of extra-role behavior, when someone is willing to overwork for the sake of their organization,” she said.

The Organizational and Industrial Psychology lecturer stated that quiet quitting, though not entirely good behavior, is not actually bad either. “Each of them has its own strength and weakness,” she said.

Work-life balance and overcoming burnout

Work-life balance can be achieved when someone limits their task to those within their job. It separates the professional world and non-professional ones, which most Gen Z and millennials have long desired. “It’s a good trend due to the efficient use of working hours without having to work overtime,” Reza said.

Quiet quitting behavior can also be a coping mechanism to prevent overwork. “It’s a way out to overcome the burnout at work, get a space for some moment to set a better working rhythm,” she said.

Career growth and organizational conflict

However, Reza believed that, individually, quiet quitting may drive someone less motivated to run their professional role. As a result, the minimum contribution to the company will lead to slow career growth.

Within the organization, this behavior may also trigger internal conflict between employees. “Jealousy in the workplace may arise with the different workload or different office hours. Before any social conflict arises, organization leaders must be aware of this situation,” she suggested.
