University Must Accept More Financially Disabled Students with Achievements

UNAIR NEWS – Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture term 2009-2014 Prof. Dr. Ir. KH. Mohammad Nuh, DEA delivered his scientific oration to 1,506 freshmen of postgraduate programs in their affirmation for 2016-2017 academic year in Airlangga Convention Center UNAIR, on Thursday, September 1.

Through his oration, Prof. Nuh reminded the students that learning is not only for getting a degree. “Know the objectives and consequence. If the objective is the graduation robe, is it to be a consequence. Start to manage your intention, intention to learn as the objective of learning is to improve character,” said Prof. Nuh.

The minister who initiated Bidikmisi scholarships hoped that UNAIR as university can accept more financially disabled students.

“The excellent university is not the one which has long line of luxurious cars parked upfront. But university which lays a red carpet for financially disabled students with achievements,” said the professor who now teaches as Electrical Engineering lecturer.

In the occasion, the alumnus of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) said that competition and collaboration are two things which walk side by side in life. “Life is confined by walls of collaboration and competition. Never underestimate those two things as both of them work side by side,” he said.

He encouraged students to have greater vision and missions as the challenge in life is even more complex and varied. He provided examples on the technological appearance of Go-Jek and Uber.

“The problems are complex and there are so many of them. I urge you to train yourself to see beyond and we must know our objectives in the future as the problems are getting even more complex. IF we can do it, we will lose as a nation,” said Prof. Nuh.

“Education is the best and tested system to cut off the line of problems and poverty,” he said. (*)
