UNAIR NEWS – There were 12 people in Universitas Sumatera Utara delegation to conduct a comparative study to Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) on Tuesday May 10. USU Delegation was received by Secretary of UNAIR Board of Trustees (MWA) Iman Prihandono, S.H., M.H., LL.M., Ph.D, Vice Rector III Prof. Ir. Amin Alamsjah, Ph.D., Vice Rector IV Junaidi Khotib, S.Si., M.Kes., Ph.D., Apt., and the Head of Audit Committee Drs. Ec. Supardi, MM.
Fahmis as Secretary of USU Board of Trustees said that UNAIR is their benchmark in managing state university acting as legal entity (PTN-BH) autonomy. They are going to learn about good governance in UNAIR MWA internally, business unit management, honored doctor award, and intellectual rights.
“The government established USU as PT–BHMN (Perguruan Tinggi Badan Hukum Milik Negara red) earlier than UNAIR. But in the development, UNAIR accelerates better in appreciating the status. It should be an example for us, right? It should be our benchmark on how UNAIR accelerates better than us,” Fahmi said.
In organizational structures, Iman said than UNAIR organs were established in share governance principle. It means that in UNAIR there are elements like MWA, Rector and Academic Senates. According to Iman, this share governance principle gives UNAIR advantage in resolving any problems.
“The advantage is if there is a problem, those three elements think together for solutions. A shared problem, solutions are sought and resolved together. The challenge is we need a mechanism with stronger transparency and accountability so it won’t be permissive and subordinative,” said Iman.
Vice Rector III UNAIR, Prof. Amin, said that this share governance is the key to UNAIR advancement and development. All established boards and directorates have their own structures and functions. But they are related one another to achieve UNAIR vision and missions.
“There is collaborative connection, not only about you and me. So with coordination, we work together and prove that our system can work well,” said Prof. Amin.
Vice Rector IV UNAIR, Junaidi also explained about academic business unit and commercial business unit in UNAIR. Since acting as legal entity, UNAIR watch over its finance as the leadership does not want to burden students financially.
Therefore, business units were established and they contributed to university financially. Junaidi said that pursuant to UNAIR strategic plan, university holding he oversees should be able to achieve 30 % of total university income.
“We have a dream that all students who want to study at UNAIR will not be burdened with financial problems. So, UNAIR can get potential students which affect its academic reputation,” said Junaidi. (*)
