Prof. Anwar: Farming Innovation Controls Diseases on Animals

UNAIR NEWS – Prof. Dr. Anwar Ma’ruf, M.Kes, drh., in the ceremony which established him as 446th university professor of  Universitas Airlangga, on Saturday  (16/1) presented his scientific speech Inovasi Pengendalian Penyakit dan Peningkatan Produksi Ternak Melalui Komunikasi Sel Secara Fisiologi Veteriner (Disease Control and Livestock Product Developmental Innovation through Cellular Communication by Veterinary Physiology).

The professor of 154th  incorporated university said that by controlling cellular communications, we can control diseases on animals and increase production of farming livestock. Similar with human which communicate, cells in tissues also communicate to each other to perform its functions in our body. Cells communicate through chemical signals which are bound with protein receptors in the cell’s surface or in certain condition in its cytoplasm or the cell’s core.

There are three kinds of general intercellullar communications, nervous communication, hormonal communication (endocrine) and paracrine communication (cell product diffusion). There are also special intercellular communication, autocrine and juxtacrine communication.

In cellular communication, there are cellular receptors composed of proteins. “These protein receptors vary their amounts in response to any stimuli,” Prof. Anwar explained.

In multicellular organisms, there are cellular communication sensor, which is a managing mechanism to maintain cellular environment at normal condition. Failure to perform cellular communication in an adaptation to response accurately from stimuli or pressure will cause function disorders in the system.

“During illness, the communications are diverging. We can control the cellular communications and normalize them, ” said 22nd active professor from UNAIR Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Other than to control diseases, intervention on cellular communications can also be used to increase the quality and quantity of farm livestock. “By observing the elements in cellular communication through veterinary physiology to maintain normal condition (homeostatic), we can perform intervention on the cellular communications as innovation on disease control and livestock product development,” Prof. Anwar said.(*)
