UNAIR NEWS – Since Tuesday, January 2, a group of Universitas Airlangga students have been working with the community in RW 9 Ujung Village, Semampir Sub-district, Surabaya. They were undergraduate students of Faculty of Public Health (FKM) who are conducting a series of PKL activities (field work practices).
They called the program promoted to the community there Jumantik Junior (Jumanji) and Generation Ujung Peduli Lingkungan (Guling). The low level of ABJ (larvae free) in the area is 71 percent, but the problems on rats and mosquitoes, and on the management garbage were the reason for them to do PKL in Ujung Urban Village.
Jumanji activity took place on Wednesday (31/1). In that activity, they conducted a dissemination event to Al-Ghazali elementary students about eradicating mosquito.
“This activity aims to provide knowledge about the PSN (eradication of mosquito nest, Red) and prevention of dengue fever to elementary school children,” said Trias Vishnu Budi as group leader.
Some selected elementary students of Al-Ghazali were trained to understand the basics of dengue prevention. They are also accustomed to share knowledge with friends and family and become the pioneer of mosquito nest eradication activities in the surrounding environment.

The students’ activities were fully supported by Puskesmas Sawah Pulo and the head of Ujung village. Both participated and actively participated in facilitating Jumanji activities.
Furthermore, in Guling activity, the students formed a youth forum that contains all members of the local youth. They will be the pioneers of environmental care.
The initial stage in establishing the forum was to invite all members of youth organization. The eleven student team disseminated the processing of solid and liquid waste, waste impacts, and the dangers of rats and mosquitoes.
The second stage, aware of the many rats that roam the village, the students held a mosquito and mouse control training by developing super trap vectors. In addition to presenting the material, they gave demonstrations as well as practices to the members of youth organization.
“In addition to growing the social values among the youth, we wanted to invite people to recycle the materials around to be utilized,” said Lestari Budi Pamungkas, one of the group members.
The established forum is expected to become a forum for continuing the activities that have been carried out by the youth especially related to the environment.
The third stage, the making of proposal and the exposure of the role model or the Ujung environment ambassador. The proposal and presentation of the role model was addressed to the village head, heads of community unit, cadres, the Sawah Pulo public health center, and community leaders in the RW 9 of Ujung. The goal was the continuity of the activities.
“We hope Guling and Jumanji will continue to move and bring change. In addition, the community makes their community into a clean and healthy community, ” added Lestari.
Before selecting Ujung RW 9 of Semampir Subdistrict, they conducted a survey through questionnaires distribution, observation, and interviews to the surrounding community. Based on that, the PKL team provide intervention to the community to be able and willing to manage the environment to create a clean and healthy environment. (*)
