UNAIR NEWS – More than 60 students of elementary school supervised by Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) looked happy. They were taught on how to brush their teeth in a correct way by young dentists in National Dental Health Month (BKGN) 2016 eevnt. It is held on October 3-5, 2016.

“Don’t rub them, but brush them uo and down slowly,” said the dentist teaching them.

“Don’t use too much paste. How much do we need? Only as much as a seed of corn,” said the other dentist.

The participants who were from Sekolah Dasar Negeri Rangkah VI Kota Surabaya followed the instruction carefully from the dentists. Friska was one of them. She followed the dentist instruction to brush her teeth correctly. She said that it was important to learn as she could practice it at home.

“I was glad I could learn. Usually I just brush the right and left part and there is no remains. But when I brush the front part, the food remains peeled off,” said the class V student.

After brushing their teeth, they had their teeth checked in Dental and Oral Hospital UNAIR.

The event was held free and was part of National Dental Health Month (BKGN) 2016. BKGN event was held annually in collaboration with National Dentist Association (PDGI) and Indonesian Faculty of Dentistry Association (AFDOKGI). It was held in 21 FKG all around Indonesia. “Why family? Because based on the study of FKG UNAIR lecturers, there is a report which shows important role of family especially mother’s to affect the way children looked after their health.

We can’t just teach them but their closest people should start it, the family,” said Desiana.

From the theme, there are two main events BKGN this year. First, dental and oral check-up in four supervised elementary schools. They are done at school and in RSGM UNAIR. Second, counseling and dental and oral check-up to pregnant mothers held in Puskesmas Mulyosari. The second event was held by students and dentists of FKG UNAIR.

“This event is special to this year’s BKGN. Why? It’s all related to pregnant mothers as the family starter. We try to as early as possible to promote good understanding on oral health and its effect to the infants. To make the mothers take care of their oral health as it affects the pregnancy. There is a report that periodontal status of pregnant mothers causes a risk of preeclampsia,” said the specialist of oral disease.
