UNAIR NEWS – Urology Department of Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held a community service activity in Duyungan Village, Sukosewu Sub-district, Bojonegoro Regency. A total of 80 doctors and students of Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) FK UNAIR deployed to give free treatment and mass circumcision for local residents on Thursday, December 28.
The enthusiasm of Duyungan Village residents was overwhelming. There were more than 400 residents crowded Duyungan Village Hall yard.
Free treatment had more enthusiasts, the mass circumcision activities held simultaneously with free treatment was only followed by 25 people. This is understandable by Prof. Dr. Soetojo, dr., Sp.U (K) Dean of Faculty of Medicine UNAIR as well as initiator of the community service.
“If in the village, mass circumcision is not so desirable because people here want their children circumcised individually and celebrated in a lively way by inviting uztaz or traditional puppets performance, “he said.
Even so, Prof. Soetojo was glad that with these two activities, FK UNAIR was able to contribute to the community.
In organizing the event, the Urology Department’s management team was collaborating with the Department of Internal Medicine Faculty of Medicine UNAIR. This activity also involves cooperation with health offices, health centers, sub-district officials, Koramil and Sukosewu Subdistrict Police Office.
The activities of the Urology Department of Urology FK UNAIR have become a tradition every year. They routinely organize mass activities in the form of mass circumcision, namely in Surabaya as well as in some other areas such as Lamongan and Pasuruan.
“Gifts in the form of sarongs and pocket money is always awarded to children participating in the mass circumcision, so the children were happy,” he said.
The surgery technique for circumcision used was conventional method, without using laser. According to him, both laser and conventional way leaving the same pain, because both local anesthetized. It’s just that conventional methods give faster and better results.
“I think conventional technique is better, the laser one is more complicated. Conventional technique is also faster, more suitable for circumcising more patients. This technique is always taught to our students Urology PPDS, ” he said.
Considering the high enthusiasm of the residents, Prof Soetojo has planned to hold another community service so the mission of FK UNAIR to disseminate importance of healthy living and circumcision to the community can be delivered.
“Circumcision is recommended and beneficial to health, because there is a potential risk for cancer,” he said. (*)
