FF UNAIR Holds Community Service to Improve Community Health during the Pandemic for Sidoarjo Residents

On Wednesday, November 3 2021, Community Service (Pengmas) activities were held with the topic “Training on the Appropriate Use of Food Supplements to Maintain and Improve Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic for Sidoarjo Community Residents” in the Sepande Village area, Sidoarjo. Considering that we are still in the physical distancing period, the event was held online and was attended by around 40 residents of RW 06 Sepande Village. The activity was led by the Head of the Implementing Team, namely Dr. Nuzul Wahyuning Diyah, M.Si., Apt. This was opened by the Deputy Dean III of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Dewi Melani H, S.Si., PhD, Apt. The Community Service Team consists of 8 (eight) lecturers, one education staff and one Master’s student, and 3 (three) Bachelor’s students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Airlangga University.

In his speech, the Team Leader said that this activity aims to provide correct information about food supplements in the form of vitamins, minerals and other micro elements that have definite doses, with supplements that are claimed to increase immunity, as well as herbs or herbal medicine, in an effort to increase public understanding about food supplements so that they do not make the wrong choice, and can use them appropriately, considering that there are many types of supplements on the market, consumption of which has soared during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the training event, a registration link is opened which also contains a questionnaire to determine the training participants’ level of familiarity with the material that will be presented. The training material was delivered by Drs. Hadi Poerwono, M.Sc., PhD, Apt. which was continued with an interactive dialogue between participants, material providers and resource persons, namely: Prof. Dr. Siswandono, M.S., Apt., Prof. Dr. Bambang Prayogo, M.S., Apt., and Dr. Nuzul Wahyuning Diyah, M.Si., Apt. The event went smoothly, even though it was held at night because in the afternoon/evening the residents were still busy with their work. Even though they were tired after a day’s activities, the training participants were quite enthusiastic about participating in the activities, based on observations of dialogue activities that took more time than allocated and the large number of questions asked both orally and in writing via the chat room.

Based on the evaluation of the pre-test and post-test results given to participants, in general there is an increase in understanding of food supplements and their correct use. Participants expressed satisfaction with the information presented in the training materials, the method of delivery, and the benefits of the training. Organisation, training facilities, training time, facilities, in general are also good and satisfactory. Some of the suggestions and input submitted include the hope that the activity can continue at another time and expand its target audience. Apart from that, participants expect related information, such as: maintaining the health and fitness of the elderly, healthy nutrition, health milk, herbal medicine, training in making hand sanitizers from facilities around us, as well as several topics that are not directly related to pharmacy and health. .
