UNAIR NEWS – Field of work of Prof. Dr. Stefanus Supriyanto, dr, MS., is health policy management which deals with hospitals, health agency, public healthcare centre (puskesmas) or clinics. It also covers healthcare system establishment such as healthcare service provider and the people who use the service in a certain area. He believed that health condition is affected by behavior, environment, genetics and medical treatment.
“Health Administration and Policy has a broad scope and application because the need to healthcare is fundamental. The contribution given is for local and national healthcare system,” he said.
Stefanus academic career in health is started when he studied in Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga. After he finished his study in 1977, he worked as a doctor in some puskesmas in Gresik. In 1983, he finished his master study in Faculty of Public Health (FKM) and at that time he was already an expert’s staff.
In his thesis, he wrote about occupational accident prevention. In 1994, in the same place, he finished his doctoral study through sandwich program from Ditjen Dikti. In his dissertation, he wrote about babies’ diarrhea management through determinant factor analysis from the baby either the nurture or the environment.
During his career as an educator, Stefanus has assumed important positions in EKM, such as the Head of AKK Concentration (S2), IKM-UNAIR (1995–1999), Head of AKM-FKM Unair (1995–2000), Head of MPK Concentration of Postgraduate program (1998-present) and Vice Dean II FKM (2000-2007).
He conducts community service on health administration and policy in many places from health counseling, health management and system consultation, healthy life promotion and many more. In his opinion, all regions in Indonesia want to create good healthcare system for the society. Health school and other health institution establishments really helps the system.
He achieved professorship in 2005. In his speech, the professor born in Tulungagung explained about healthcare system reformation in Indonesia. Indonesian healthcare system can be seen through excellent healthcare aspect development. Developmental problems can be seen from the inability to control negative impacts of development which cause dissatisfying healthcare development.
Therefore, Stefanus viewed the need in healthcare reformation, by conducting reorientation, restructuring, healthcare financing system development, partnership, and empowerment. Regarding Indonesian healthcare system, Stefanus explained that the hampering of this system implementation is the changing policies. (*)
