UNAIR NEWS – Recently, a few public figures are alleged to commit domestic violence and extramarital affairs. The cases have drawn public attention and made them wonder: What needs to be prepared before marriage to prevent domestic violence and extramarital affairs?

Psychology lecturer of Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Psychology (FPsi), Dr. Ike Herdiana MPsi Psikolog shared her professional views. There are 9 things to be prepared well before marriage.

Prepare these 9 things

Before marriage, someone has to prepare several things, such as mental readiness, emotional maturity, and problem-solving ability. Besides, someone also has to set the financial fund, be open-minded, stay flexible in facing any situation, and understand the importance of hope.

Someone has to build a proper support system within the family as well before stepping into the marriage. “If you still have family conflict, it’s better to have it solved before marriage,” Ike said.

She believed that a married person’s mindset is all about living together. Therefore, couples must understand each other well. “Prepare these 9 things well before marriage,” she said.

Causes of domestic violence and infidelity

Before marriage, it is important to know the triggers of domestic violence and infidelity for prevention.

Ike said, “Domestic violence is a result of the negative emotions or emotional outburst to the partner within the domestic or household territory, both physically and mentally.” Multiple factors may trigger violence, including stress, economic pressure, poor self-control, and inability to solve problems in life.

She further explained that historical factors may also cause domestic violence. Someone who was raised in an abusive family tends to grow up developing violent behavior. It increases the potential for domestic violence.

“So is infidelity, which may occur due to unresolved conflicts in marital relations. For instance, marital dissatisfaction, seeking for special others, and revenge,” Ike said.

Help victims of domestic violence and infidelity

“If you see any case of domestic violence and infidelity cases around you, you have to report it to the local authorities, neighborhood officials, and police, before something bad happens,” she stated.

In the end, Ike hoped that the victims may get help for a much more proper living and safer future. She warned the community to stop labeling the victims of violence and infidelity.
