UNAIR Nursing Students Educate Diabetics to Stay Healthy

UNAIR NEWS – Nursing Students of Master’s Program in Medical Surgery held a community service by educating people with diabetes mellitus (DM), members of Persatuan Diabetes Indonesia (Persadia) Surabaya. Hundreds of people with DM crowded the Hall of the Faculty of Medicine, Campus A UNAIR, Sunday, October 29.

The community service was conducted in collaboration with Persadia Surabaya, in order to commemorate World Diabetes Day(WDD) 2017. It was opened by the Head of Persadia Surabaya Dr. dr. Soebagjo Adi, Sp.PD., K-EMD., FINASIM.

Described by the head of the committee, Moch Dadang Suharno, S.Kep., NS., with the deputy,  Argo Winoto, S.Kep., NS., the community service held in the Hall FK UNAIR was the second of his department, after the first one held in Dupak Bandarejo, October 12. The material presented to the diabetics was an application of an article taken from a Scopus journal, so it has been tested.

“What we apply here is towards the peer group activity, on how among members of diabetics can give each other support and motivation to get healthy, although individually they have diabetes,” said Dadang.

In this community service, 49 students of 10th generation Master’s Program of FKp UNAIR  had “Improvement of Welfare of Diabetes Client through Peer Group with 3P Approach (Promote, Prevent, Protect)” as a theme.

“Healthy With Diabetes Mellitus”, the book distributed to the diabetics, was the main topic. Quoting the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the estimated number of DM patients in the world by 2015 is 415 million and is expected to be 640 million in 2040.

According to IDF (2015), Indonesia is ranked seventh in the world, with the number of cases in 2030 estimated to reach 21.3 million people, and about 75,000 people died from uncontrolled diabetes (WHO, 2016).

Master’s program students of FKp to the diabetics presented “Why I’m Diabetes”. It was described how to recognize the symptoms of DM, understand the cause, how to monitor the ten symptoms, and how to deal with DM. DM is a disease when the body is unable to produce insulin, so blood glucose levels increase (hyperglycemia).

“Some of the ten symptoms of DM, quickly feel tired, slow healing of wounds, frequent urination at night, decreased body weight, tingling, blurred vision, also the sexual problems,” he explained.

The diabetics also given knowledge on controlling consumption patterns, diligent check-up, routine exercise, etc. Therefore, they are taught to do exercise, done by standing or just by sitting in a chair by moving the feet.

“Even with only sitting and moving the legs, it shouldn’t be underestimated. It gives benefit as an effort to stay healthy for people with DM, “said a student and instructor for the diabetics.

For this WDD in FK UNAIR, Persadia is holding some activities, such as a seminar in propadeus room, blood sugar examination, insulin injections, and gymnastics contest followed by the elderly groups from various urban villages in the city of Surabaya. (*)
