UNAIR NEWS – In the world of health services, communication and collaboration are essential. Treatment of patients can not be done by one person alone. Therefore, good interprofessional collaboration skills are needed.

Dr Afif Nurul Hidayati SpKK(K) made the statement on Thursday, September 22, 2022, in a seminar entitled Implementation of Interprofessional Education (IPE) for Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC). The event was held at Dharmawangsa Hall, Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA).

Dr Afif explained that the treatment of patients involves many parties. Therefore, IPC is needed to bridge these differences.

In IPC, several professions work together as an interdisciplinary team to provide services to patients. “All health and non-health workers, not just one profession,” explained Dr Afif.

In the IPC system, the patient is not only the responsibility of doctors. Nurses, pharmacists, ambulance drivers, and hospital parking attendants have a role in their treatment. The decisions made for the patient cannot be determined unilaterally by the doctor.

“All decisions on patients are a shared decision and responsibility.”

The Universitas Airlangga Doctor Education and Training Manager said that IPC is essential to prevent miscommunication in patient handling. “The slightest miscommunication occurs, the effect can be tremendous. It can threaten patient safety,” she said.

Furthermore, Dr Afif also explained that the patient’s family was also involved in treating the patient. Because of the importance of IPC, Universitas Airlangga provides education through Interprofessional Education (IPE). One of them is through an event attended by young doctors and cross-faculty students in UNAIR.

“The goal (students, ed) is to have competence as an interprofessional team,” said Dr Afif.

According to her, IPE is useful so that students are not only competent in their respective fields but are also able to communicate and collaborate.

“So things threatening patient safety won’t happen.”

IPE is one of UNAIR’s programs as one of the best universities in Indonesia , which promotes collaboration between fields of study. It is in line with the seventeenth point of SDGs , partnerships for the goals.
