FH Debate Team Wins in East Java Debating Competition

UNAIR NEWS – Taking part in a debating competition has been a tradition for students in Semi-Autonomous Association Airlangga Young Jurist Society (MYMA) Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga. This time their debating team won the third place in regional East Java competition held by Faculty of Law,  Universitas Narotama, Surabaya.

There are five students in BSO MYMA delegation. They were Safira (2016), Malikuzzahir (2016), and Isyrofah Amaliyah (2014) for the debating team, Thoriq (2016) and Hanan (2016) in the research team.

The competition called H.R Djoko Soemadijo Legal Debating Competition was held in January 25-27, 2017 and followed by 11 universities, either state or private university in East Java. They were UNAIR, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel, Universitas 17 Agustus Surabaya, Universitas Trunojoyo Madura, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, Universitas Negeri Jember, and some other universities.

Before the competition, preparations were made to support their performance in the competition. Even they had less than a month for the preparation, the delegates succeeded to win a trophy.

“We are proud of this success. We never thought that with less than a month of preparation we could do it, and for two weeks we were busy with our exams, but alhamdulillah we can get a throuphy. Determination will never betray you,” said Isyrofah as the leader of the team.

For the preparation, the debating team was supervised by Ekawestri Prajwalita Widiati, S.H., a lecturer of Constitutional Law Department, UNAIR.

For winning the third place, Isyrofah and team have succeeded in defeating the team of Universitas Pelita Harapan, Surabaya, and Universitas Katholik Darma Cendika, Surabaya. In the semifinal, UNAIR delegation failed to defeat Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel, so it had to face Universitas Yos Sudarso, Surabaya. From this two debating match-up, UNAIR achieved the third place.

The motion of the debate during preliminary was suspect determination as object of pre-trial and the fifth amendment of UUD  1945. In the semifinal, the motion was prenuptial agreement after marriage. While for the third place match the motion was Military and Police Political Rights. From those motions, UNAIR team was the pros team.
