Exciting news came again from students of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga. This time, students who are members of the Delegation of the National Law Debate Competition Brawijaya Law Fair 2022 (BLF 2022) won 3rd place. The delegation from the Semi-Autonomous Body of Airlangga Young Jurist Society, Faculty of Law, Universitas Airlangga (MYMA FH UNAIR) consists of Kevin Hartono ( 2020), Syarifah Fatimahtazzuhrah Rukhsal Assegaf (2020), and Aditya Nur Rizki Putra (2020). The three of them were also accompanied by three researchers, namely Tazkia Sahria Aulia Mahmud (2020), Septi Tri Cahyanti (2021) and Citra Agustin Pratiwi (2021).
In an interview, representatives of the delegation consisting of Syarifah, Aditya, and Septi shared their experiences while participating in the National Law Debate Competition at the 2022 Brawijaya Law Fair (BLF 2022). Through this opportunity, Syarifiah explained that the 2022 Brawijaya Law Fair National Law Debate Competition (BLF 2022) had been held by the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya, and had been taking place from October to November. The delegation’s stages must pass, including the preliminary round, semifinals, and the final. Of course, this journey had to be difficult because many delegations from other universities had to be faced. “Incidentally, from BLF 2022, the participants consisted of 14-16 universities,” he explained.
Various difficulties were also experienced when preparing for the two months before participating in the 2022 BLF Debate Competition. According to Syarifiah, legal debate competitions held offline were more complex than online. “So the preliminary round and semifinals are still online. When the final round was only offline, we had a bit of trouble switching from online to offline,” she explained. Septi then added that they also had difficulty managing practice and research time with classes that had started offline.
Aditya then also explained that the motion obtained during this competition was related to the National Capital (IKN) transfer. This is, of course based on the theme raised at the event, “Enforcement of the Supremacy of Law Against the Transfer of the New State Capital”. At least three motions that the delegation at each stage of the competition had debated. Preliminary round with a motion to move the National Capital (IKN) to respond to the climate change crisis. Round eight with a motion to apply the chemical industry as capital for development in the National Capital City (IKN). The final round with the most challenging motion regarding the establishment of a unique agency for dispute resolution in the State Capital Region (IKN).
Septi, one of the delegation’s youngest students, said that he had an initial impression when she was elected as a delegate. One of these initial impressions is the feeling of being challenged by the given motions because in-depth research is needed to understand them. According to her, many valuable lessons and experiences were gained while being the BLF 2022 delegation this time. In closing, they conveyed tips and tricks for participating in legal debate competitions. Syarifah emphasized always being diligent in practicing and doing research. In addition, she added that building trust between team members is also essential, so there are no doubts when competing. “Here we bring the good name of the alma mater of FH UNAIR, so team cohesiveness is also important to maintain,” she concluded.
