‘Good Parenting Communication Skill’: The Right Way Avoiding ‘Sexual Abuse’ to Children

UNAIR NEWS – From the phenomenon of increasing number of child sexual violence cases in Indonesia which causes traumatic impact on children, five students of Faculty of Nursing (FKp) Universitas Airlangga proposed a method of Good Parenting Communication Skill in giving sex education early on to children.

In Good Parenting Communication Skills health education materials , children will cognitively understand ways to avoid sexual abuse, affectively the child is aware of the dangers of sexual abuse and psychomotorically children are able to help themselves and others through the potential of physical and psychological strength they have.

This method teaches children to know and mind their limbs, the children know how to dress correctly based on their genders. Then the children know his family members, as well as others who may or may not be allowed to touch.

By applying this method, parents are able to communicate with children well and effectively about sex education early on to prevent sexual violence in children. Parents no longer feel uncomfortable and worried in teaching sex education properly in children, because children are given good education from parents.

This is explained by Sri Puastiningsih (2013), the team leader, met at the campus with the members Nur Jazilah Hemadiyan (2013), Lavita Kirana (2013), Yeni Rahayu (2014) and Farida Norma (2015). Under the guidance of Dr. Esti Yunitasari, S.Kp., M.Kes, the result of this research is written in the proposal of Student Creativity Program in the category of Humanity Social Research (PKM-PSH).

After going through a rigorous assessment by the Directorate General of Higher Education, this proposal passed and was entitled to obtain research grants in 2017 Kemenristekdikti’s PKM program.

“We hope all parents can apply this method to teach children about sex education at an early age so later on the children of next generation of the nation can avoid sexual violence behavior, “said Puasti. (*)
