Maintaining Community Trust is Current Doctors Challenge

UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) again inaugurated new doctors. This time around 188 doctors were inaugurated by the Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Dr. dr. Soetojo, SpU (K). The oath of 188 new doctors was made solemnly in FK UNAIR Hall on Wednesday, July 25.

The third period of doctor inauguration in 2018 adds the number of graduates produced by the second oldest medical faculty in Indonesia. Since 1954, FK UNAIR has graduated 10,253 doctors.

The joy was not only felt by families, the Vice Director of Professional & Research Education FK UNAIR Dr. Anang Endaryanto, dr., SpA (K) was also happy.

The graduation of these new doctors was certainly not achieved without struggle. Anang applauds their hard work especially when the graduates become a medical residents (DM). They have to take clinical education (KOAS) at the hospital.

While there, the majority of them became co-assistants from students of specialist medical education programs (PPDS) and nurses in carrying out the duties of treating patients in hospitals.

“We quietly investigated it, the presence of these residents was very helpful for the duty of nurses in the hospital. Even information from patients, they served kindly and work beyond nurses attending, “he said.

Responding to current technological advances, Anang appealed to physician graduates to be encouraged to improve the skills and quality of service to patients.

“After graduating, your biggest enemy is public distrust on doctors’ quality in Indonesia. We cannot deny, there are still many people who seek treatment abroad, ” he said.

The advancement of information technology has facilitated access to services for generations of doctors in the future, but it is not flawless. According to him, if the next generation of doctors cannot adapt, then it can lead to dependence on technology. One of them is addicted to social media.

Social media addiction in general will affect the quality of service between doctors and patients. thus resulting in insensitivity and lack of empathy for the surrounding environment.

For this reason, Anang appealed to new doctors to be able to use technology wisely, so the process of patient care goes well.

“Don’t let gadgets make doctors become less sensitive to the needs of patients,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dean of FK UNAIR Prof. Dr. dr. Soetojo, SpU (K) was optimistic if the graduates of FK UNAIR are qualified graduates as the medical education has been accredited by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) International and the ASEAN University Networking-Quality Assessment (AUN-QA).

In addition to Medicine program, 43 other programs have also been accredited by LAM-PTKes with A result for all programs. The percentage of graduation in the Student Education Program (UKMPPD) Student Competency Test, also reaches 99 percent graduation.

“Of approximately 2,500 UKMPPD participants in Indonesia, only eight participants from FK UNAIR have not graduated,” he said.

According to him, the quality of FK UNAIR needs to be balanced with the loyalty of graduates considering the spread of doctors in Indonesia is not evenly distributed and still centralized in urban areas, Prof. Soetojo appealed to FK UNAIR doctors graduates to serve in various peripheral regions.

“This is an opportunity for you to do more charity. Remote communities need you, ” he said. (*)
