Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s International Webinar discusses recent developments in Veterinary Science

FKH's International Webinar Poster

UNAIR NEWS – The rapid development of technology, including in veterinary medicine, has also led to the development of new concepts in the world of veterinary medicine, from basic veterinary sciences to clinical applications. Veterinarians must be able to adapt to these developments in order to be accepted by the millennial community.

In an effort to update the science for lecturers, students, young veterinarians, and veterinarians regarding the development of science in the world of veterinary medicine, UNAIR Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) on Thursday, December 10, held an International Webinar. As speakers in the discussion, there were Dr. Sirinum Pisamai, DVM., Ph.D. from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, Prof. Dr. Mochamad Lazuardi, DVM., M.Pharm. from Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Dr. Mohd. Zamri Saad, DVM. from Putra Malaysia University and Prof. Dr. Mitsuhiro Takagi, DVM., Ph.D. from Yamaguchi University, Japan.

Dean of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Mirni Lamid, drh., MP, in her speech hoped that collaboration would be established with the speakers and the speakers’ universities so that collaborative research would emerge between lecturers at Universitas Airlangga and partner universities.

Molecular Approach for Canine Oral Cancer Management

Material presented by Dr. Sirinum Pisamai, DVM., Ph.D., focused on the use of the latest techniques, proteomics, to identify and search for biomarkers of various stages of oral cancer in dogs. The discovery of specific biomarkers at each stage will make it easier for veterinarians to provide therapy management so that the cure rate for this disease will improve.

“Proteomics can also be used to map the image of the proteins present in the saliva of dogs with cancer, so that with the discovery of specific biomarkers of canine oral cancer, a non-invasive diagnostic process will become a necessity in the future,” said the lecturer of Chulalongkorn University Clinical Surgery Department.

Drug Discovery for Veterinary Practice

The discovery of new drugs in veterinary medicine uses the same approaches and principles as those used in humans. The approach that has been currently carried out is an empirical approach, an approach based on the experience and habits of veterinarians and an approach by design in silico (Structure-Based Design, Ligand Based Drug Design, Computed-Aided Drug Design).

Prof. Lazuardi, Professor of Veterinary Pharmacy, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UNAIR, revealed that each approach still has advantages and disadvantages. Thus, it is felt that the combination of empirical and by design approaches can be used as a platform for the discovery of new drugs in the field of veterinary medicine.

Research in Veterinary Pathology: from Bench to Consumers

This material describes the role of veterinary pathology in the supply of food from healthy animals to consumers. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Mohd. Zamri Saad, DVM. using the example of pneumonic manhemiosis (formerly known as pneumonic pasteurolosis) in livestock.

“Veterinary pathology, which is actually a basic science that studies the response of hosts to disease agents, can be used as a basis for the management of therapy and prevention of a disease. It can be concluded that, with a correct understanding of a certain disease pathology, it can determine how much the eradication process or eradication of a disease will be achieved, “said Professor of Clinical Diagnosis, Putra Malaysia University.

“The follow-up of this activity with the enthusiasm of the webinar participants, there will be efforts made to hold continuous thematic webinars to discuss current issues in the field of veterinary medicine,” concluded the executive committee. (*)
