UNAIR NEWS – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Prof. Dr. H. Mahmud Mahmodin SH SU MP attended Indonesian Rectors Forum on the second day, on October 30, 2022.

The national figure spoke about the Strategic Role of Legal and Security Democracy Development for a Prosperous and Just Indonesia. Mahfud MD believed that the theme is suitable for welcoming Golden Indonesia 2045.

“The topic is highly relevant for now and even forever as long as Indonesia exists,” he said.

The Universitas Islam Indonesia professor believed that Indonesia needs to prepare a well-built democracy development and healthy law system. The relevance of democracy in Indonesia is unquestionable.

“Democracy is not up for debate. We use democracy in any case. It has been tested,” Mahfud said.

The statement was made to respond to several parties who want to change the state’s system, including amending the Pancasila as the nation’s principle.

“I openly refuse the idea of Pancasila amendment,” he said.

Instead of being an Islamic state, Mahfud preferred Islamic communities in the society and educational environment. It is proven by the number of mosques, including in Universitas Airlangga.

“Every faculty has its mosque,” he said.

Mahfud said that Pancasila, democracy, and the form of the state came from a great effort of the nation’s independence figures. “Bung Karno was once a santri, too,” he added.

The minister further advised the audience to vote for their future leader carefully. Do not let the elected leader change the democracy. “We’ll have a general election next year. Vote for the right leader,” he advised.

Reflecting on the 1998 riots, Mahfud invited all the academicians to let democracy prevail and reform the system if needed.

“Let the democracy prevail. If the system is broken, we, being the academicians, must reform.”

In the end, Mahfud suggested that the Indonesian community can build a healthy democracy together. It is the best choice for the nation.

“Democracy is the best option we have. Let’s build a healthy democracy,” he said.
