UNAIR NEWS – Varicose veins are caused by various factors. According to dr. Yoga in a presentation in “Mother Care Program”, first, they occur due to female or gender factors. Women experience pregnancy and the period of pregnancy can be a burden. In addition, activity in the kitchen makes women stand a lot.

The other factor is heredity. When a grandmother or elderly had varicose veins, the individual may be very likely to have varicose veins.

“Symptoms are swelling. The veins stand out and turn blue and purple. In fact, wound is hard to heal because the blood flow that brings nutrients from the heart is disrupted, “said dr. Yoga in the activity.

Diagnosis of varicose veins is not necessarily done privately. Dr. Yoga advised to check them at the nearest vascular clinic and examination procedure is performed. There should be Q&A session with the doctor, physical examination with a vein viewer tool, and ultrasound (Ultrasonography) exam to the lower thighs.

As the second speaker in the event, dr. Niko provides an understanding that the current varicose treatment techniques is safer than ever with Endo Venous Frequency Ablation or using a small needle to insert laser fiber using local anesthesia.

“Conventional surgical methods such as vein stripping, i.e. with an incision on the folds of the lower thighs has been abandoned. The current method is more secure. The doctors are required to perform ultrasound, “said dr. Niko.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of participants in the “Mother Care Program”. The event was initiated by the Vascular Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA) in celebrating 2017 National Mother’s Day, through free ultrasound examination for varicose veins for mothers, counseling, and other interesting activities with prizes.

“There was high participation and enthusiastic participants as it is supported by various parties. This event was held with simple concept, but hopefully it can provide many benefits. And it is planned to be held on an ongoing basis. As the initiator, I hope we can take advantages from this event, “said dr. Niko Azhari Hidayat, Sp.BTKV during his presentation.

The counseling and examination in Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic, Room A, second floor of RSUA was not only attended by mothers, but also students from other universities. Kevin Giovinda, one of the participants from STIE Mahardhika Surabaya, admitted that although he learns accounting, he and his friends really want to get knowledge about varicose veins after being told by the lecturer.

While waiting for the examination, the participants received council on how to recognize and prevent varicose veins by dr. Niko Azhari Hidayat, Sp.BTKV and dr. Ardhitya Yoga Pramantara. Moreover, the committee held a selfie competition with prizes and beauty classes from Venus. (*)
